Sara

Sara

A Poem by John D Phillips
"

One of the first songs I ever wrote. None of the original lines survive.

"
I remember you in running shoes
You were the fastest girl in the state
You cut indelible, scintillating treads
With your diamond mouth, your eyes, your neverending legs.

You ran your heart like a reciprocating saw
Smart like the morning, sharp as anger
Mixed with your dust were dozens of unwise fingertips
And I loved your sister though I lived to regret it

I know you're a little high strung,
But if I touched your hair would you run away?

I remember you in casual sneakers
You were with that guy that looked like a turtle
You kept your notes with unparalleled organization
I watched your golden ponytail above my desk like threaded sun

You wore sandals in the cold dark of the theater
Heels in the light outside the stadium
I haven't seen you since before you got that camera
But I've seen those captured souls in the paper and known it was you

I know you're a little high strung,
But if I touched your hair would you run away?
