Lucifer's WaterfallA Screenplay by John C. ChillLucifer meets a group of teenagers.EXT. THREE YOUNGSTERS, TWO GIRLS AND ONE BOY, STANDING IN A PRAIRIE, THE WIND BLOWS ON THE GRASS. CAMERA IS STILL FROM BEHIND AND A DISTANCE FROM THEM. CUT TO: SIDE ANGLE WHERE THE THREE OF THEM ARE CAPTURED IN SEQUENCE AND PROFILE SHOT. INT. THE THREE TEENS ARE IN A LIVING ROOM, TALKING. SOPHIE: I miss the summer.. PETER: Hell, me too.. It has been too long. Specially the nights at the lake. CLAIRE: Everything is better than winter. Sometimes just thinking about the nights at the lake makes me feel warmer. Perhaps because of the booze.(laughs) PETER: Claire! We're inside the house, don't talk like that inside the house, Claire!(jokingly) SOPHIE: Exactly Claire! That's not very wise. And in my house!(jokingly) CLAIRE: Yeah, yeah, I'll shut up. I'm sorry if I let myself go with memories but its the only thing that remains. SOPHIE: Memories always stay... we will always have those, right? PETER: You girls are too nostalgic. But you're right, nostalgia has a weight to it. It remains forever. Maybe we'll be nostalgic about his moment in the future. CLAIRE: Honestly, I'm going to miss all of them...(Claire gazes with a hint of sadness) PETER: Are you all right, Claire? You seem a little too sentimental. SOPHIE: It's just the memories of-- CLAIRE: --Sophie... please. You two are my best friends in the world and Peter also has a right to know. It's not that far away, after all... PETER: Claire? What's going on? CLAIRE: It's... I'm...-- (starts crying progressively) LUCIFER: --Your friend is sick, Peter. She's dying. Peter gets scared when he hears Lucifer speaking, but not Claire and Sophie, they've already met him. Lucifer stands across the room, cloaked and imposing. LUCIFER: I'm Lucifer, king of the dead and ruler of the underworld. Hell, as you may know it. I'm her for you to understand that your friend will die in the near future. They have already met me and you're the one left. You must be wondering why I'm doing all of this and the truth is simple, for you at least. At the lake, last summer, you had long conversations under the starry sky where you touched on a substance that binds the universe together, and by doing so deserved the honor to meet me when Death came to any of you. And here I am. PETER: So that means you have come for her? LUCIFER: I'm just here doing what I have to do. The task of taking your friend is not bestowed upon me. PETER: If it's not up to you, it's up to who? Death ? Maybe its God, he doesn't seem to care anyway. LUCIFER: God does not exist. Remember that. Not even I exist. Indeed, none of you do, not even our shadows exist since we have no bodies. We are all symbols, Peter. Just because we're here talking to each other doesn't mean we're alive. In the end your friends will die, you will die and I will die without ever being alive. Death and life are just words. Bubbles of air repeated consecutively. Why should they mean anything? Nothingness is the dictate of life and the meaning of life is Nothing. Peter looks perplexed. Not scared. Just perplexed, astonished, surprised and oddly fulfilled. He looks at his friends and none of them are crying, they all look at him, with serious grins on their faces. Lucifer stands up and states his final words. LUCIFER: I should leave you now. Enjoy the time you have left with each other and in your lives. There isn't much more you can do. Nothingness awaits us all. CUT TO: EXT. BACK TO THE LANDSCAPE, EXCEPT THIS TIME IS DEVOID OF ANY CHARACTERS. JUST A PRAIRIE AND THE BREEZE RUNNING THROUGH THE GRASS. Fade to black. THE END
