A Mind is a Terrible Thing

A Mind is a Terrible Thing

A Poem by Dillon M. M.
"

This was something I wrote when I fell into my latest bout of depression.

"
A mind is a terrible thing.

Beautiful in its flawless imperfection,
but damaged in its monstrous authority.

Every idea slowly meditated and pondered,
like a phantom burn resonating in a metallic sea of affliction.

Distraction seems like a proper substitute from the tantalizing pains of life,
but no song or comfort is more turbulent than the repetitious beat of a broken heart.

A purpose is something I miss having,
my heart beats for nothing, like a clock without time.

But even in my darkest of hours they can not be my last,
because from here on, it will get better.

It will always get better.

I really enjoyed this! It seems everyone has different lines that struck them most, but mine was definitely how the mind is "damaged in its monstrous authority". Our thoughts and perceptions hold so much sway over how we act and behave, how we view other people and situations. I just thought that was really powerful. I also liked how there was a little bit of hope snuck in towards the end. I like to think that "every cloud has a silver lining" - there is always a bright side somewhere. Thanks for sharing :)

I like the line you wrote about having ideas: "phantom burn resonating in a metallic sea of affliction." That is deep and the entire poem is thought provoking. I like your writing, Dillon. Thanks for sharing.
