On the Avenues

On the Avenues

A Poem by Emily

I count my body as parts of a whole
With it I can name roads in myself
As a cartographer with their map.
Traveling alone.

This street is quiet pine sentinels
Craftsman houses, a Spanish outsider,
Christmas lights in each room.

This street is soft music playing,
A piano in an alleyway
Keeping time, with invisible fingers keeping stroke.

This street is cars blasting metal
Or hopping to Biggie Smalls,
Youth enchained.

This street is streetlights at sunset
Blue, white, and orange
Substituting starlight
This street is staring a car straight in its face
As it stops dead in front of you

This street is memories fading faster than I can refresh them.

Here, a vein
There, some skin
A bone sticks out from the dirt
Pointing down the lane.

Thank you! Your words mean a lot.
Emily, I am going back up to read more, but I had to tell, rather ask: Do you know how great this is? Wow! I let out a sigh, as I read : with invisible fingers keeping stroke. I already, how been attacked with your first stanza and now, the beautiful images of this site appear, another image, and oh how sad I felt for the mother of Biggie Smalls, I loved him, not every line he spoke, but I felt such a pure heart inside: I see more and more: enchained, feel like those kids with my silly words. Alright, I quit; there must be a word much smaller than novice for me; Your poetry is so amazingly beautiful. I am blown to a place, with a canopy, in such peace, smiling as I leave here. Thank you.
