Outsider

Outsider

A Poem by Drew Given
"

How it be sometimes

"
Tell me what it’s like to be ever present
Thoughts staying in the moment
Never questioning who you are
Or who you’re supposed be

What it’s like to enjoy a full day
Without thinking in the back of your head
All good things must come to an end
Is it just me?

What’s it like to be surrounded by people you love
Smiling faces everywhere you look
And not feel like you’re on the outside looking in
Always on the periphery

Can you laugh without thinking about the next time you’ll cry?

Can you find the silver lining without ringing the rain cloud dry?

Can you have a bad day without thinking, “You know, it wouldn’t be terrible to die”

Believe me. I try.

I stay strong on the surface, but there’s a storm in my mind’s eye

With nothing and no one to keep the rain from hitting me

And I can’t help but think that that’s the way it should be

It's not just you. The questions you ask represent universal human experience. It sounds as though you are going through a dark night, but believe me, there is eventually a dawn.
