TimeA Poem by Drew GivenYou know, just eating popcorn and pondering mortality. Our minds are funny things They cling to time, Yet lust for what it brings We long for the ticking to go faster Impatient waiting for things to master Finish one thing, on to the next Never stopping to take a breath We stare at the clock, Anxiously waiting for the hands to drop So intrigued by what tomorrow may say, We forget today was the tomorrow of yesterday
As children we wish to grow There are things to do, things to know We run and jump and laugh and play, All while wishing our youth away “When I grow up,” we tell ourselves, Wanting to put our youth on shelves “Don't grow up too fast,” our parents warn But these sentiments, we only scorn
But it doesn't stop when we're finally older For now ambitions start to smolder Instead of fun, we live for goals Ambition is all that matters, or so we're told So much time is spent in schools, Yet in the end, we're all just fools Our youthful years just pass us by While our dreams are reaching past the sky
And even once we've reached our goals, We still don't wish for time to slow For once your foot is in the door, The hall is filled with many more We tell ourselves, “We're still so young! We'll enjoy life once we're done.” We pick and choose, And choose and pick, All the while the clock still ticks
Until one day, it finally slows We dreamed our youth, and now we're old And with so few years left on the line, We stop worrying about the time And we can't help but wonder as we slow, Where did all of that time go? © 2015 Drew Given |
