Moments

A Poem by Drew Given
"

This probably has some deep psychological meaning that I wasn't actively thinking about while I wrote it

"

Somewhere in the distance, a cricket chirps

Just one

The night sky is pitch black

Save for a single star

The truck is parked by the riverbed

There is only one passenger

He's moved to the truck's bed

He came to look at the stars, and listen

And smoke a cigarette

Only a cigarette

But there's only one star

One cricket

He pauses before he lights up

His thumb on the lighter

The silence is absolute

Save for the cricket

The lighter would disturb it

A metallic nuisance amidst natural tranquility

He twirls the cigarette in his fingers

He asks if it's worth it

A cloud passes above

He looks up

It's covered the star

The cricket stops chirping

He sits in silence for a moment

And then he lights his cigarette
