Alone

Alone

A Poem by Drew Given

'I'm alone' he said

He was, so there was no answer

He looked at his phone

'I'll tell my phone I'm alone'

His phone was his friend

They were never apart

His phone could mend his broken heart

He picked up his phone

'Phone, I'm alone'

But his phone didn't answer

There wasn't a tone

Just some meaningless posts

And on did they drone

He opened his contacts hoping to find

Just a single person to pay him some mind

He scrolled through wondering, 'Who really cares?

I'm here alone while they're unaware'

He dialed a number and said 'What the Hell,

I've nothing to lose, so I might as well'

A friendly voice answered, 'Hi, are you well?'

And before he could answer he felt the tears swell

'No, I'm alone'

'Well come over, and just ring my bell'

He put on a coat and walked through the snow

For the first time all night, a smile did show

He rang the doorbell as he was told

And his friend let him in from out of the cold

They sat and they talked about that thing and this

Friendship at that moment was as sweet as a kiss

As he went home that night he thought about this

How such a thing he could ever have missed
