Old Peice of Gum, I am Tired of Chewing YouA Poem by Jessica Elaine Stevens [Faiteach]The memories we savor the most, are the ones we lose the quickest. The shape of your name is more familiar to me than your face is. The dots on the i's, the curve of a P, or a B, or perhaps an M- The letters are so much more significant than the slope of your shoulders the arch of your neck or the height of your cheekbones. My memories of you are faded and tattered- As an old love letter too often read, cried over, and re-folded- I have worn thin the shadow of your voice. I trust, if I continue to run my fingers over this pen and construct poetry in your likeness; if I continue to rub my thoughts over your face, and recollect your eyes in all their emptiness; I will eventually wear you down and smooth over the rough edges you left in me. Because the memories we savor the most are the ones we lose the quickest, so I will roll your name over and over my tongue until you lose your flavor and spit you out into the dirt where you can stick, where you can flatten, where you can become a nameless blemish and remain something wholly Unrecognizable.
