I'm a Mermaid Without the Advantage of Fins

I'm a Mermaid Without the Advantage of Fins

A Poem by Jessica Elaine Stevens [Faiteach]
"

Or the ability to breathe underwater, for that matter.

"

I don't know how you managed

to crawl so far inside of me

I thought I was impenetrable-

my openings are only so deep

and yet I find you reaching

straight up through the center of me-

And I'm trembling

to see you again.

My guts are weak and loose,

my heartstrings vibrating-

but they make no sound.

I've gone and bounced my

feet clean off my

Anxious Ankles-

and I can't stand the thought

of crawling on my hands and knees

to beg you back to me.

My breath tastes of charcoal,

ash and Butterflies-

I could power every light

in this densely empty city

with the intensity

of my synapses and nerves

as they fire flares of warning Electricity

ALERT, ALERT

Iceberg Ahead--

You can only be here in my path

to gouge my Ironsides

Again

Crack me in half

and sink my battleship

I thought I was made to survive these waters-

You got the best of me

but I never got the best of you.

Oh, but, God, My God,

it's getting colder-

as I'm splashing salty water

in this Kiddie Pool of love

Guess I'm still a

swimming amateur.

I'm really bad at reviewing, but I love this poem. I love the way it flows, and it has some great unique metaphors.
