PerspectiveA Poem by Desiree Stem
It's hard for me to love you
When another man's love is polluted on your worthwhile skin Covering every nook and cranny The slightest crease does not go unwarped With what I want to deem pure. How could I possibly mold my lips onto yours When they leaked the words "I love you" And those words were not for my ears to proudly possess. But you have convinced me to embark upon your tainted pair Contaminated with what truly was. How can I hold you When I can smell his peculiar scent rotten the threading of your clothes That sent my blood into a frenzy upon entering my nostrils. The fortress that my arms built around your delicate body Is similar to the folds he implanted Just before I gained the rights To proclaim you as temporarily mine. How can I hold your hand When his defiling hands have marched Alongside your smooth fingers connected to your palm Every criss crossed indention adulterated With what was your future And ultimately not mine. It's hard for me to love you When I never truly did.
