IS THE GRASS REALLY GREENIER ON THE OTHER SIDEA Poem by D. L. Hutson
A young woman sees a woman with little ones passing by I wish I was her, she thinks…. A single female looking at a married family She thinks, I wish I had that life….. One the outside looking in Can’t see the scars under the skin Always looking at the other side Wanting what they have- never satisfied. Always looking on the other side Can’t see what’s in front of you Your eyes are on someone else’s prize You don’t know what they went through The poor looking at the rich Why them and not me The weak looking at the strong They think some people are just lucky Sometimes the grass does look greener over there But we don’t know what they had to go through To get where they are at Be content with what you got Be faithful in little and God will give you more The young woman doesn’t know that the woman with kids She’s on welfare struggling barely scraping by And that she’s thinking she wished she would have listened to her mother The young woman doesn’t see or hear the groans and the sighs The single female doesn’t see the married woman’s black eyes. And all the praying and trying to leave at night. She doesn’t see the kids afraid and abused Always having to lie to people and the teachers at school. On the outside looking in Can’t see the scars under the skin Always looking at the other side Wanting what they have; never satisfied. God has a plan for you He loves you and He desires for it to come true Be careful what you want in life Especially if the life you want is not meant for you. Don’t you know that God wants what’s best Can’t you see he loves his prince and princess He can’t give you something that’s not good for you What father will give his child a stone when what they need is bread. You can’t see what’s in front of you Cause you want to wear girlfriend’s shoe That shoe was not made for you God has your own shoe custom made Stop looking over the fence And try to enjoy your own shade Be thankful for what you do have Before even what you do have, God takes away. A young girl tired of following her parents rules I want to do what I want to do It’s my life, I’m in control You’re too dumb; you can’t tell me nothing. Can’t see that she’s digging a hole The same hole her mother fell into She’s doomed to repeat the same mistakes Because she wants to wear someone else’s shoe At least I finished school; You didn’t I know more than you; you quit My friends mom finished college and makes more money than you What she doesn’t know is her friends mom sold her soul to gain it. On the outside looking in Can’t see the scars under the skin Always looking at the other side Wanting everybody else’s -never satisfied Always looking at the other side Can’t see what’s in front of you Your eyes are on someone else’s prize You don’t even know what they’ve been through Why are we never satisfied Why do we look to things to fill us up More money, more money we cry When we see the people with money Become so filled with pride We always ask for more; Never enjoying what we have We find were not in control anymore God doesn’t want our desires to dominate us He wants us to delight in him desiring him alone.
