Secession in a civilized nation

Old Scotland wanted to secede

The people cast their vote

The no votes held the ballot box

Scot independence smote

The losers bowed out gracefully

The winners didn't gloat

Old Nessy kept the Union jack 

The nation held the vote 

Not a single shot was fired 

No voting with the gun

The Scots achieved a victory

They showed us how it's done 

Author's Note

Scotland pulled off an incredible feat this week. They pushed independence all the way to a popular vote and no one got killed, no troops called out, no one blew up a voting booth, no calls for an armed rebellion, nothing. The Scots taught the world how a civilized people attempt succession. They turn out in massive numbers to vote and accept the outcome. So here's to the Scots. HIP HIP HOORAY!!! HIP HOP HOORAY!!! HIP HIP HOORAY!!!

Ah, that's what the constant talk of yes and no was about. For awhile I've heard nothing but the discussions on whether they would choose to vote over something much less significant than this, and yet I almost missed the success of civilized succession. Great poem!

Well I appreciate the writing but I think the BBC did show a bit here andd a bit there were some fronts got together to show their discontent. I think comparision never quite reach the level of fairness as the UK is more of a tribal nature. Even the expressions of anger that came about as a result of some debates probably quickly solved later at the pub via pint of Guiness. Quick now are all the rest of the tribes shouting for their own bit of independence. Cornwall , Devon, some parts of Wales . anyhow still Engurland to them.

Showing discontent is good. More often than not it's about the only way to change the status quo. Calling out troops because militants are blowing s**t up, not so good. So far that hasn't happened in Scotland over this vote and it probably won't.

I am sorry to say you know nothing about the history between England and Scotland and the way in which the English have controlled the Scots for decades. This is no victory as it was a subjucation of the people by threat and the manipulation of ignorance by the elite!

I was in the Al Anbar province with the first Marine division stationed in Iraq in 2005 when Iraq held their first "elections." Out of fear of being murdered well over half the candidates on the ballot were "secret" candidates who didn't so much as wear a campaign button prior to the election. On the days running up to the election there was a stepped up campaign by the enemy to blow up as many polling stations as possible to intimidate the locals not to come out. We were on non stop patrols for 3 days prior to the election to provide security.( That means we didn't sleep for three days) We found so many IEDS we lost count after a while. The unidentified dead bodies were piling up fast as we could count them and on election day there was street fighting all across the province including suicide bomber attacks and an assault on a polling station in one town with an anti tank rocket. On top of all that the officials rigged the election. That's one fucked election wouldn't you say? and I had a front row ticket to it. Lucky me, right? In my little PTSD rattled head that's what I'm comparing the Scottish succession vote to. If you want something closer to home, like other white people, look to the goings on in the Ukraine for a comparison. The Victory this poem is talking about for Scotland isn't the vote for succession, it's the way the Scots did it. Nobody died and nobody blew anything up. Trust me, that s**t does happen.

I fear you miss my point. I agree with you and have no wish to seee blood shed or to see democracy crushed. In real terms though the Scottish vote was also reached out of a fear spread over centuries of subtle subjugation and grooming by the establishement. So no blood but still no democracy.

Honestly, I wanted the secessionists to win. That would have been really cool. But alas, they didn't and considering all it takes to turn a movement militant these days is an a*****e with a pipe bomb I'll take the secessionist loss with no violence any day.
