President Obama's administration recently negotiated the release of one Sargent Bowe Bergdali from the hands of the Taliban in exchange for 5 prisoners from Guantanamo bay. That's the place Obama said he's close back in 08. Naturally the right wing media machine attacked the president for "negotiating with terrorists" and claimed the deal was illegal. America "negotiates with terrorists" every fucking day. One of our strategies in Iraq was paying off war lords and imams with large followings who were fighting against us to play for our side against the heavy influx of foreign fighters coming into the country and it was a damn good strategy. We bribed Clerics, imams, government officials, we promised jobs, we promised stability, we promised weapons, we promised aid of all sorts, we used threats, we used corporal punishment. We negotiated with anyone who we could make listen to move things forward in Iraq and now the right wing machine is attacking our president for what has been accepted policy decades. The captya reads "Smackful.' I can think of a few on the right I'd like to give a smackful;

Sometimes we just have to do what we gotta do. Gotta give a little to get a little. I see nothing wrong with that. I believe in no man left behind. If we gotta give up a few prisoners to get some of ours back, so be it. Let's trade em, and when we're done, we'll find a way to make up for what we lost. But if we aren't willing to do what we must for our own soldiers..... Let's ship some of our politicians over there, let the enemy take them for a while, and see how fast they are crying out for a rescue. I bet they'll break pretty quick.
If you can save one of your own.Someone who has done so much for his country .Why shouldn't you do everything you can. How can that be wrong ?Very pissed of write Baby, and rightly so.
There is the spin - the media spin and then there is the reality of it all. If we knew the reality - our brains would implode.
Go get 'em Rico. Give 'em a smackful. They need it.
Great and insightful work as always, Rico. I'm glad that you explained further in the Author's Note...although I'm fully aware that we've "negotiated with terrorists," I didn't know many of the details, and that was quite helpful.
I think that no matter what, there will be skewed points of view when we don't have all the information. Unfortunately, that's just how it is. But as for the poem itself, I love it - great (and bitingly funny) "f**k you" to the hate propaganda machine.

It's something that is totally foreign to me (being in combat and all), so it's difficult for me to relate to...but I admire the fact that you've been through it and are able to express yourself so well. We each have our own conflicts to go through, and I'm glad that poetry can do that for you.
