by F. Scott Fitzgerald . My favorite book of all time.
When I think of some of my favorite books The Great Gatsby is always top of the list. F Scott Fitzgerald's mad cap jag through roaring 20'S New York trendy scene of lavish parties, forbidden love and bathtub gin. I've read the book several times and can burn through it in just a few hours (it's short) It's laugh out loud funny in spots yet tragic in others. Fitzgerald's prose boarder on poetry and it's a great time capsule of a very short lived scene in American history that was confined to a small in crowd (white folks with money) of only a few cities in the North. I've never seen so much as one movie version of the book and I never will. There's no way Fitzgerald's style could be translated onto the screen and all I'll get out of it is pissed off for wasting my time on another great book Hollywood ruined by trying to make a movie out of it. I've never read another one of Fitzgerald's books either. I know it'll pale to Gatsby and I want to remember Fitzgerald that way. If I could fit my a*s into a time machine roaring 20's New York would be my first destination. I'd get liquored up on illegal hooch (and possibly go blind) at a speakeasy in Harlem, dance to the crazy Jazz sound of the day and make it with a flapper chick. Awesome.
Read it in high school, but not since. I will have to put it on my list - each summer I read a classic that either I have not read before, or I read too long ago to remember. Your endorsement is enough for me... you have given this teacher some homework, Mark, and I am grateful!
I can now proudly say that I have read this book, and I love it. I'd been meaning to for years, but it kept getting pushed aside, and now we've just finished a unit on it in school. It's definitely one of my favorites. Thank for sharing it, this is a great tribute to a great book :) And of course, it's a rule: never see the movie of your favorite book. You'll always be disappointed.

My story Gutter Dog in part wrote to honour Hemingway … guess which name I spelled wrong. Oh and my first essay submit for my Theatre of History class … yep, you guess it … Shakespeare, which I somehow got into my twenty-year-old mind was spelled Shakespheare. Thank you God for spellcheck. I enjoyed your commentary, baby.

But I prefer Under the Volcano for a drinking book. Gatsby is a bit of a sap. ;)
