Where Was God in That

Where Was God in That

A Poem by Baby Ricochet
"

Some of you aren't going to like this.

"
I've heard the southern preacher lie
to his congregation
I fought the Imam's followers
Sent them to damnation
The priest who touches little boys
gets swept under the mat
The only thing I wonder is
Where was God in that

Jews were Yahweh's chosen people
The tribe he favored most
The diaspora and holocaust
God's chosen paid the cost
They finally got their promised land
In Israel's caveat
The one thing I keep asking is
Where was God in that

The fundamentalist mind set
thrives on stupidity
Trying to make pseudoscience
out of mythology
Public school creationism
Kids dumber than doormats
The only thing I wanna know is
Where was God in that

We fought against the Jihadis
Put bullets in their head
Every Marine a rifleman
We shot their asses dead
We killed a generation off
Genocidal bureaucrats
The toxic riddle dogging me
Where was God in that

Twisted scripture for agendas
Churned out of basic greed
Xenophobic tribe rivalries
Based on a primal need
To kill off those who threaten us
Our neighbors we begat
I'll shout it from the mountaintop
Where was God in that
The day I shed this mortal coil
I pray to God I find
Whatever I was looking for
Within my short lifetime
or just a simple answer to
why life has so much crap
Hey Yahweh bro I wanna know
Where was God in that

Author's Note

Baby Ricochet
The old preacher asked the Sunday school class what faith was. A boy raised his hand and said "I know what Faith is preacher. Faith is believing in what you know ain't true."

"Some of you aren't going to like this..." - he said as he pulled the pin on the wordy-grenade.
The frivolous rhyming of the piece belies its power - I suppose the same way that grenades are sometimes called 'pineapples'.
Another good one BR

Very compelling. You blend history with an age old question; is there a God? I'll be damned if I know. If he does exist, it seems he's concentrating his time on others planets, probably because we dissed Zues back in the day. Anyway, am impressed how you strung together long stanzas that rhymed, not easy to do, I write a couple of lines and my mind wanders off. Oh yeah, The Blood Sweat and Tears said it thusly:" I swear there ain't no heaven and I pray there ain't no hell, but I'll never know by living, only my dying will tell" Hope to see you on the other side!

God is often an unwanted guest at parties He never plans. If He doesn't plan the party, how can He be blamed? If man has free will; and he commits a sin, mankind is responsible - not God. Unfortunately, man rarely wants to take responsibility for his own shortcomings. So, what does he do? He blames the God that He shuns.

Thank you for your input Linda. I appreciate it
GAH! I almost always always always hate rhyming in poetry, but MAN did you use it to good effect here! And I love the question too. I've been asking myself this question more and more often. No real comments to help the poem, unfortunately, but honestly it's great as-is. Thanks for sharing, and if you get the chance, please check out my work and drop any insight you find. I think you'll particularly enjoy the one titled Apostasy. It's my frustration coming out in a poem stemming from the same question, and the lack of answers. -Shawn

Will do. Thank you Shawn
To answer your title, God was busy spreading aids in Africa! He is reaponsible for the good and the bad right? Seriously though, great piece all the way through.

A question you have every right to ask.....

Questions....questions...look to your heritage for a little light...they call it dark...but it's really light...you see...they lie.
Enjoyed it.

Thank you Lucian.
God is the other side of the coin you describe, BR. God is all the good people can and do do, when they choose that route. People walk through fire to save others - that is the Good Force - God if you choose to call it that. Those who murder and savage others are the Bad Force - Satan to the religious. For every Hitler there is a Gandhi, I believe that. I have to or the world would make no sense. Thank Goodness for people like Pope Francis - may his reign be long and fruitful! You have experienced a lot of the worst in people, BR. I only hope that you have also seen a lot of the good, too. Your poem sounds like a cry for understanding and knowledge. I hope you find it, my friend.

Good insights Joyce. Thank you for your input. I duly appreciate it.
God was probably shaking his head thinking we need to figure out our own messes, free will you know. The author's note is funny, out of the mouths of babes.
