Fascinating - this speaks so eloquently of the mindset or programming or whatever you call it of young men mostly but I suppose some warrior chicks - we tap into that DNA - that berserker identity and we excel at the fight - but then we come back home with all that horror and glory saturating our every cell - and peeps wonder why we cannot just "be normal" Every culture has it. Every generation. I personally think this is a standout piece.
Pretty good writing but the opinion I cannot abide. 1914-2013 is a war way too long to endure. It is time for a meeting of the Moot and give you warriors one last final boot. I know that this will enrage and make the bloodthirsty engage in the deceit of victory. You forget the bone pickers serve the grave diggers after the birds have had their fill. There is still a place set for you at the supper table. The RSVP is in your hands. Peace.

Nice rhyme. It's an open site and you're entitled to your opinion. Thanks for stopping by
Your last stanza says it all. There are terrorist warnings going on as I write this. It takes special people to go to war for their country. Some may think they're nuts, but without them who knows where'd we be and who would be dictating what we do. This is a great poem. It goes without saying--thank you for all you've done Ric.
I knew that wouldn't quite be "The Last Poem." That said, this is very good my friend. You paint the picture if hearing the call to serve, and it is both a majestic and a frightening sound. It reminds me of the Florence and the Machine song "Drumming Song." Nice flow and meter, well done.

I think it's on the album "Lungs" if you're gonna go looking for it.
This is a great peace that tells a tale of how fucked up soldiers can get when they go into battle. A lot come home and don't know how to treat their families like actual families. A lot come back with PTSD. Even if they come back whole on the outside they may not be on the inside. And for what? Nothing really.
I can't remember who said it, but there's a saying that "the rich send the poor to war." It's always about money and territory.

Been focusing on other endeavors, but I always seem to come back here eventually.
I don't think peace is ever going to happen, period.

When you write from your core, it's hard to say no. Byron was a warrior poet, some of his stuff is truly great. He had a way with words few manage to come close to.
I'm not saying you are as great a poet as Byron was, but you have talent my friend and here you show what's in your blood. well done.
Read this one twice already, even though you swore you'd never write these again, you put your guts, heart and soul into this, it's apparent in all of them I've read, this is truly a passionate subject for you that oozes and bleeds from your pen Mark...
I write just for the hell of it
A way to spend some time
Blurting out in cyber space
Whatever's on my mind
Maybe funny maybe tragic
Emotional and raw
