Over the edge

Over the edge

A Poem by Baby Ricochet
"

The America I came home to in 09

"

What's all this talk about a big fiscal cliff

Most folks have already been thrown off of it

Into an ocean of high interest s**t

They take a fiscal stick and beat you with it

Credit card offers coming out of their a*s

They said it's like getting a never pay pass

With all that interest you'll never get past

We should have known it was to good to last

All those mortgages so many signed on

Were concocted by a deranged leprechaun

Rubbing his hands and waving his wand

        Abracadabra another loan con

What's all this weird a*s fine print about

You'd need a tax lawyer to figure it out

What am I signing off at closeout

 Is Ebenezer Scrooge somewhere about

Just close your eyes and sign on the line

It's OK pookey everything will be fine

Don't worry yourself if you get in a bind

We have the perfect lending design

We spent like ADD kids in a big candy store

Went back to the bank and said gimmi some more

Bad waters were rising on a bear market shore

We all had amnesia this had happened before

Then came the great depression of 2008

Quick sell that house oh s**t it's to late

You'd be better off if it sunk in a lake

Betting on nothing but a numerical fake

Life saving investments vanished into a mist

As a golden retirement turned into a myth

With black stockings of coal left to play with

Conversation soon turned to the slashing of wrists

The banks started foreclosing on homes again

Cause they wrote the rules with an invisible pen

They thought it would all work out in the end

Economics is no place to wish and pretend

Bailout money flew all over the map

Just to get the big boys out of their trap

They told the rest of us to hike our boot straps

While the rich CEO'S kept all their crap

We marched down on wall street all in a huff

Asking why the rich kids got to keep all their stuff

Their bailout money proved plenty enough

and the working tax payer still got the rebuff

Makes you wonder if it's even worth trying

With the big money greed and political lying

They spin so much crap that isn't worth buying

When the middle class dream is steadily dying

A wise old saying. Most of the USA is poor. "Can't fall too far when you don't have far to go." This election told me no-one pay attention. Left the same people in the House, Senate and President. They will do the same thing they did the last four year. I learn to budget and live with less. My concern is war. Need a strong leader to go to Israel and stop the killing before we have a world war. Thank you for reading my words. I enjoyed your thoughts.

Ugh I relate! Debt is like a hole you've dug for yourself with the help of pipe dreams and false promises - I'm still climbing my way out - wonderfully written poem of the reality of the financial world

promises made by presidents......
senators.....
every goddamn politician elected since then by we the people that were never kept.
Even my juvenile min knows that its onky going to get worse and by the time I get up there our economic troubles will be as deep as the pit of tartarus. And theres nothing I can do.

That's true... All we have is hope...
And I can relate with this poem...
I like the way on how you keep the flow of your poem with perfect rhymes..
It's really a good piece...
You managed to convey what you feel without even a sweat...

I am pretty sure that national debt and this crap that is going on has no impact on the lives of normal people. I can't prove it and I am not knowledgable on the topic of economics, but that is seriously what I feel somewhere in my gut. I think that politicians just want to scare us so that we place our faith in them.

I like the reference to Scrooge, but there is something off in the flow of these two lines, maybe? "What am I signing off at closeout
Is Ebenezer Scrooge somewhere about"- I don't know... you may just want to give it another look over.

The dreams of the middle class have been dying for sometime in this country now, but there was certainly a breaking point in 2008.
My question was always: Wouldn't it have been better if the government just let them fail? Let us all fail? Sure it'd be hard, but in the end would we not have come out stronger? And wouldn't we all have felt better if the government didn't bailout major industries when they never had any intention of fixing... I don't know, my small business, my neighbor's house, ect.

Nice poem, as is often the case with your work, an important topic that you've laced well with your biting humor.

Great job!

Will it get better? Even though we do have hope, I must admit I'm not so sure

No one is. hank you for reviewing Edge Kailer
The beginning, I feel, says it all. A concise and accurate statement of the financial troubles about this country and its citizens, as well as the world. It is nice to see perspective and thought on a topic that is relatively hush-hush; most politicians would have you believe everything is okay and the majority of people, if they even know about the fiscal cliff and scenario, would rather not stress about it.

Political satire might be tricky, but you've pulled it off great. The truth in this is biting and sharp.... in my opinion, exactly what is needed. The rhyming structure coupled with the imagery give this poem a brutal sing-song quality to it and for that I love it. It matches the brutality of the times, of politics, and the do-or-die sensation in economics in general. Very enjoyable read, Ricochet! Very nice done.
