Chapter FiveA Chapter by Phillitup
A shiver found its way up Cody’s spine as he and Thra trudged across the landscape. An eerie air was given to the grounds in the oncoming darkness. Clouds had been drawn before the sun and a breeze had become a chill that stung. The two had lain on the rocks, looking at the sky and talking for about ten minutes before getting bored with the clouds. Thra had eagerly suggested they journey into a mysterious set of passageways that she had found within the second month at the academy. Now Cody was regretting even coming outside. “Are we close?” Cody whimpered. “Don’t be a scaredy cat; a little wind won’t hurt you. Yeah, we’re almost there. Do you know the time by any chance?” “Yup. It’s 1:31.” Thra nodded, calculating how much time they had left. They walked on. “I do have to warn you though,” Thra commented, “there’s only one way to get inside and there is a possibility that you can get wet.” “What do you…?” Cody began but Thra shushed him as they came upon a ditch. “Okay. Stand back.” In one mighty thrust, Thra plunged her fist into the ditch. She twisted it into the dirt, grinding it. As she gasped in pain, Thra stumbled back, closing her eyes tightly. Thunder rumbled and rain came from nowhere. No steady drips or drops, no warning. Full on pounding rain fell from the clouds. Cody placed his hands over his head, a useless maneuver. He stepped closer to the ditch, seeking some way in. With a shriek, Thra reached out her hand and pulled him to the ground. He could feel her breathing in his ear, wet and uncomfortably close. As her gasps subsided, the rain grew, drenching the talents. A slice of lightning plummeted to earth striking in the dead center of the ditch. Dirt flew and thunder shook the Earth. It rained soil that stuck over the two teenagers. Cody’s breath was hard, strained. Thra rolled a couple feet away. Groaning, she managed to pull herself into a standing position. She walked over to Cody and pulled him from the ground. Holding on to each other, they made their way over to the ditch. A sizzling hole full of darkness replaced the scoop of missing land. “What was that?” Cody managed to cough out, dirt and dust coating his throat. “An experiment.” Thra cracked a grin. “Usually another source provides the shock.” The talents dislodged from each other and Thra scrambled down into the hole. She completely disappeared from sight once her head slipped inside, the darkness forming around her. “Ya coming?” She called from inside. With a grimace, Cody slipped underground.

Rain threw itself into Calum and Leo’s faces, water spraying everywhere. They were soaked in an instant. “We have to stop them before she can send a shock. I would guess we have about a minute to find the ditch before it comes.” Calum frantically pulled Leo, blind, through the torrent. “Ditch?!” A flash of lightning struck the grounds yards into the distance, Calum screamed in desperation. A puff of dirt replaced the flash and the ground shook underneath the boys. Slipping, Leo moaned. Somehow, even without shoes, Calum managed to pull Leo up and continue running. “Thra! Cody! Wait!” He shrieked at the top of his lungs. A sucking sound came from a few yards away and both Leo and Calum fell in a heap to the Earth. They lay, drenched to the bone. Calum lit an electric spark. It was doused in the rain and sputtered out. He moaned and scrambled to his feet. “We have to open it again but my talent isn’t working!” He cried into the rain, spitting out a mouthful of water. Leo stood up, wiping his hair out of his eyes. He squinted, water stinging them. “What’s going to happen to my brother?!” Calum remained silent, standing in the rain. He tried to force a spark again, shooting it at the sky. Nothing. Leo tried to run but his shoes slipped on the grass, he fell on his face. He pushed himself up and grabbed Calum by the shoulders. “I think I have an idea.”

“I can’t see anything.” Cody complained as the hole sealed itself up with a loud slurping sound. He was quite disturbed. “I know that genius, I’m working on it.” Thra lit a spark on her finger, throwing it at an angle. Light resonated through the passage. It was circular and rather small. It was Cody’s height. Five feet and five inches. As Cody leaned forward for a better look, his head knocked free some soil and rocks. He spat out the dirt in disgust, wiping his mouth free of it with his sleeve. “Nah,” Thra said, watching Cody, “I’m just gonna take a drink.” She poked her finger inside her mouth without letting the two touch and spurted out some rain drops. A drop ran free, trickling down her face. She swiped vigorously with her arm. “Let’s go.” She suggested, starting to walk down the passage. Cody grumbled and jogged to catch up. The passage got darker and dimmer with every crunchy step. Dirt stuck to Cody from all around because of his wet skin. Cody let his thought’s wander. I wonder why she wants to visit these passages so much. She obviously hasn’t been here in forever. But, I mean, look at her. How could you not trust someone with so much power? And she’s every shade of mysterious. Bro, can you hear me? A voice rang inside Cody’s head. A searing pain shot through him and he crumpled to the floor. “You okay?” Thra asked, real concern in her voice. Cody moaned. What are you doing to me? Me?! I’m saving you! Do you even know your way out of that place. No but she probably does. WRONG! Calum told me that the passages are dangerous. There’s no way out once in, you will be lost forever. You need another shock from up here to even open it. Calum would but the rain is his problem. He can’t light his shock if it dies once he does. Really? Cody’s thoughts became a nervous heap. “Thra,” he stumbled to stand up, “you knew that we would be stuck, right?” “Well, I was hoping that it wouldn’t be true. You notice how long we’ve actually been wandering? I’ve been trying to get us out for a while. We’re lost.” “Why didn’t you tell me this?” “Because I knew you wouldn’t come if I did.” “Yeah! And then I wouldn’t be stuck down here!” “Sorry.” “No you’re not! If you want to get out of here, stop the rain.” “What?” “Stop the rain!” Cody stepped towards her, grabbing her neck. “Why are you doing this… you…you FREAK!” Cody recoiled. “I’m no more of a freak then you. We ALL are. Now stop the rain!” “Fine! Have it your way.” A cracking sound resonated. © 2013 PhillitupAuthor's Note
