Chapter TwoA Chapter by PhillitupLeo sat nervously twiddling his thumbs. He hadn’t brought anything with him from home to keep himself occupied because he had foolishly assumed that it would be over quickly. The tests had gone quickly. They were odd and very random but having a twin with dreams like Cody’s proved that anything is truly possible. The talent guard who had escorted him made him sit in a chair in a barren room made of stone. Nothing to look at, nothing to do. That had gone on for ten minutes. Then the guard had pulled him into a giant life sized maze. Five minutes. And finally they handed a stone to Leo and watched him and the rock for twenty minutes. Leo had set it on the ground, stared at it, threw it against the wall, and finally (only because he was exhausted) he cupped it in his hands and took a nap. After the fifteen minute nap, Leo was refreshed but sadly there were no more tests. Cody, on the other hand, still wasn’t out of testing. That was probably because their mom had sent in a detailed description of what to look for in Cody along with the twenty page application. So far in the waiting room, Leo hadn’t heard a single person be declared “talented”. It convinced him that he would not be one of the lucky ones. Talent guards only ever found one in billions of people. In fact, the only talents found in the last two hundred years were a couple of kids Leo and Cody’s age. Only two were said to have applied. Talent guards were everywhere. Cody walked into the room and sat in a chair next to Leo. I wonder how it went. Leo thought to himself. Fine. What about you? Leo turned to Cody. “What?” Cody asked. “You said something, right?” Leo shook his head. “I wasn’t even ‘connecting’.” Cody paled. “What?” He lifted a finger in the direction of the door. A talent guard was standing in the doorway. “Cody and Leo?” They stood. “The results are in.”

The three members of the family sat in folding chairs in front of a grand desk. The front of the desk was engraved with the letters TS on it. “I’m afraid we have some bad news.” Said the husky man sitting in a leather rolling chair. His mustache lay in front of his mouth, muffling his words. The twins mom tensed and leaned forward in her seat. “Yes?” The man leaned farther back into the seat. “We’ll have to send them away for further testing. Most people believe if they turn out positive then it’s just a onetime stop and nod. There are actually far more things we do here at the Talent Search. They’ll have to go across town for a one day and night test. If they make it past that then we’ll have to send them to the school for the final test. It’s a long and complicated process unless it’s truly clear within a couple hours in the next test. We aren’t saying they have the talents but we are saying that they have a better chance of having one then most people. We have only discovered five other talents in the last two hundred years but their talents were quite clear after the first or second test.” “Thank you sir.” Their mom stretched her hand over the table and the two shook hands. The twins were dumbfounded. Another test? They’d have to see. Cody stood and turned to go. “Wait!” The man shouted through his mustache. “Can we take them right now across town to the testing center?”

Do you think I have a talent? Leo asked his brother, hoping thoughts were sufficient. He didn’t want to talk in front, well really behind from where he was sitting in the van, the talent guard. I don’t know. I know we’re twins and stuff but I don’t honestly consider this normal. Do you? I guess not… Plus, if I can do this and my weird thing about dreams…maybe you can do something too. Thanks. That was so nice. I’m sorry bro but it is true. We don’t even know if my dreams really are anything. True. But most people who know think they are. I guess. “Excuse me. Are you two boys okay back there?’ The guard asked from the front seat. “Yes sir.” Leo tried to sound regular. In truth, he was frazzled. He had never been so stunned, worn out, curious, or, or, frazzled. Man, are you okay. You look a little…out of it. Um, yeah. I’m just tired. Leo pulled at his seat belt. Not to mention that I feel like I’m being choked alive. Cody laughed and then, realizing what he had done, slapped his own hand over his mouth just as Leo hit him in the rib. “Oww!” Cody yowled. The guard turned around. “What?” “Nothing! Face the road!” The guard faced the front as they swerved, trying not to hit a tree. What’s wrong? You made me hit myself in the face! Sorry… Sure. I am! Right. “Boys?” They broke their gaze from the others. “Yes sir?” They chorused. “I don’t think we need you anymore. Thinking on it. We have all the data we need. I’ll drop you at home. You’ll need to pack your bags.” “Why?” Leo questioned. “You’ll need them to go to TSA.” “What?” “Talent Search Academy.” “For the final test?” “No. You will want to get settled before your classes start, am I correct?” “But I thought…” “We might explain it at the academy. We will pick you up in four hours. You have a limit of three bags each.” Cody and Leo grinned. © 2012 PhillitupFeatured Review
