Vaseline Eyes

Vaseline Eyes

A Poem by deer-heart
"

It's all in your perception...

"

i look at you with my vaseline eyes
and wonder,
how did this come to be?
when did we lose laughter, and love
when did our smiles become so false?
when did we start smearing vaseline
on plexiglass sheets from out in the shed,
holding those sheets to our eyes
seeing the world (just each other) through vaseline?
both our lips are chapped
so we take some vaseline from our plexiglass lenses
and smear it on our lips
so that when we speak to one another, we only hear the vaseline
that through which we see
and i look at you with my vaseline eyes
and i wonder.

I like this. People often have distorted visions of those they love, both before and after things go pear shaped. Unfiltered reality is tough on a human mind. That's what poets are for, to look at the world and see it for what it is. Then to extract the good parts and display them well. I think you achieved that here.
