Story of a soulA Poem by Deepshikha DeStory of a soul: Fragments of coloured pieces Washed away by the sea waves I stood at the shoreline, watching the waves go by This is what I did in my past time, Waves of nostalgia wash over me, As I stood looking at the sea. When I was about four, My parents and I stood along the shore, We saw a star fish. When I was about fourteen, I had my first kiss At the age of sixteen, We slept under the stars Watching the shooting stars afar When I was about twenty five, We went on a family picnic We sucked on orange bars, And had lemonade under the stars. We went on car rides on the open beach, To pick up the sea shells, my children, I would teach. We had cosmopolitans on the beach, We used to look beyond horizons that we could not reach. And now in my old age, I stand by my grand daughter And she howls away in laughter. We held hands, the sand started slipping through my fingers. We held on to the memories that lingered. My body has become pale and frail, In the place that my wedding bands were, Was now an empty space with imprints of love. As I stood in front of the sea, All my yesterdays behind me. I discovered my life was an illusion, Or perhaps it was an enchanting delusion Sand castles made with a lot of care, Towers and turrets made with a lot of flair. Day dreaming to star filled skies. Underneath the open skies we lit bonfires. Playing truth and dare along the warmth of the fire. A lone shooting star we admired, After my first break up, I sat on the shore, Throwing pebbles into the sea for hope With all the pain she could cope, The tears merged with the sea water. They were carried away by the waves later. She wanted to get buried on the sea beach Along with the lady was buried Memories of lessons that the sea would teach. © 2014 Deepshikha De |
