SIMPLICITY

SIMPLICITY

A Poem by Deepshikha De

 SIMPLICITY

Constricted by a society, where there are rules to be followed.

A woman committed suicide, because of the sleeping pills she swallowed.

Born into a simple village , she was sold to  a wealthy  man.

She wasn’t used to the luxuries of an ac , in the village she used a fan.

She had troubles adjusting to the upper classes, in English they spoke.

Secretly behind her back ,it was fun that they would poke.

They would always very willingly  correct her grammar.

There were rumours , that her husband was in an affair

A kind friend told her she had something to share,

She realized she had walked into a corrupt man’s  lair .

So before he came, she said her prayer

When she asked her husband,  he just did not care.

This is society, you have to adapt ,

“Maybe you have to sleep with my business partner ,don ‘t be so daft.

You better listen to me you stupid prude,

Otherwise I should do things to you that are extremely crude.”

“How will I do that, what will people say?

I can’t afford to live life this way.”

“ You are my wife, I won’t let you stray

You have to do this, come what may”

Then that night, on the bed as she lay

She wondered what would happen to her the next day.

The business partner  was a strong and beefy man

He did things that the constitution would ban.

The business partner had a tan,

Other than her husband, she had never dreamt of another man.

The business partner had had a drink that night,

He was in the mood for a fight.

So, when she came to him, one fine night,

He was drinking a whiskey under the tube light.

After the first night, her animosity grew,

She had thoughts  of suicide as she prepared the chicken stew.

A second day passed, a third day too.

Out of this whole maze, she could find no clue.

Then one night, in a flash of desperation,

Her husband complained ”Your family did not give any dowry”

She called up her parents, ”Hello, Can you hear me? This is Gauri.”

I have had really grave  injuries and there are too many secrets  that I want to bury.

Her parents were simpletons, they said on the line,

‘’He is your husband , Gauri, everything will be fine.”

She broke down, in the house she found  sleeping pills

She just wanted to reduce the pain, she had no idea it could kill.

The next morning , on the bed, Gauri lay still.

Her husband signed the deal with the beefy man.

He would find another simpleton, that was the plan.

Gauri’s  story was lost in a haze,

Her simplicity killed her, it was a tough phase.

However, while dying, she saw a light,

A ray of hope that floated into the night.

Life is a tough lesson to learn, my friend.

Unless you adapt to it, this could be your end.

This is a very good story placed in poem form... it is a bit rough but so was her life.. The first verse introduced your character and her message very well. My favorite line: He did things that the constitution would ban. This line alone tells a lot. The only thing that confused me was you stated a woman committed suicide and yet in the poem you state that she just wanted to end the pain.. so I'm not sure if she meant to take her life or not..
Very nice job..
