The Unwritten Quest

The Unwritten Quest

A Poem by Brandon Gene Petit

One fateful night I follow a voice
Persuaded to leave the comfort I’ve known
A cry for help from the bowels of oblivion
Comes to me in a subliminal scene

My damsel bound to a distant prison
Her face shadowed by the Devil’s claw
A prize beyond the gates of nightmare
Beauty estranged in a spectral swamp

My nemesis guards her in furtive pose
I tap its domain in seek of its face
Weapons minted apart now meet
Again invisible blades will cross

The enemy crouches behind its riddles
Waging the name of my captured love
It reaches out and mirrors my form
Beckoning me to join its world

It reels me in with a cobra’s charm
Seducing me into fantasy
 Tunneling deep into mental ruin,
I penetrate the empire beneath

Unearthly awe dilutes my fear
No longer a stranger to strangers’ lands
An eerie peace will subdue the hero
Who is brave enough to join the prisoner

A journey split into nightly chapters
Installing the parts of an unwritten quest
Through placid days I yearn to end
My hungry heart then guides me in sleep
