Behind These Closed Doors

Behind These Closed Doors

A Poem by Deborah Leah Krempa

Behind these closed doors

Everything is quiet, everything is hushed

He is drunk again tonight

I count the days and mark them down on the calendar

No one knows what goes on behind these closed doors

Danny died from a heart attack

The truth be told it was pills and booze

He just couldn't cope with life when he came home from Nam

Everybody has to die someday, but Danny, he was a good kid

Sometimes I think about Danny, you know? He was my brother-in-law

Everybody has to die someday, but Danny, he was a good kid

Cats and dogs running in packs, Danny, he took in all of the strays

Let them have the run of this old house, like cat chasing mouse

Oppression reigned here as he became obsessed with alcohol

Sometimes I think about Danny, you know? He was the younger son

Everybody has to die someday, but Danny, he was a good kid

Damn it, Danny! Why did you come home and drink yourself to death?

Danny, sometimes I think about you and the days that you were sober

Oh those day were few & far between, such a sad & tragic life

Oh dear Danny, I really hope you're in a better place, the war is over now

Roads in life are often not of our choosing, Danny, he was a good kid

So long Danny, until we meet again...
