I Am My Mother's Daughter

I Am My Mother's Daughter

A Poem by Deborah Leah Krempa

I am my mother's daughter & my name is debileah

As I have no Indian name

My mother bore an Irish name

My name is taken from the Holy Bible, mom's choice for me

You know my dad was French and Pennsylvania Dutch

Mom was Irish and Cherokee

Out of the mixture this poetess emerged

Thoughts race through my mind in manic episodes

Heartbroken, sad & grieving, as I am still in mourning

Everything I shall write here will be the truth as I know it

Recalling my life's story as well as I can in poetry and prose

Seems to me, my calling in life is to write about all of this

Damn, you know life can be so cruel at times, it hurts you

A dysfunctional childhood is hard enough to deal with

Until you find yourself as an adult with even more chaos

Gather up all the memories you can and write them down

Happens to become a book of poems all about your life

Tough times you pulled through and rough roads ahead

Every now and then something joyful or funny happens

Rest assured my friend as you read my poetry, I am my mother's daughter
