A Crystal Cup

A Crystal Cup

A Poem by Deborah Leah Krempa

She's living the life I gave up

Drinking out of a crystal cup

She's wearing the shoes I stepped out of

Maybe with her you have fallen in love

Her slippers are beside your bed

On a pillow next to you, she lies her head

She's living the life I gave up

Drinking out of a crystal cup

I love this. It is how I used to feel.

The other woman: when he wonders why she was available, her flaws will become apparent, and she will, in his eyes, become just like you. It doesn't matter why you gave it up, you are gone and have a chance to reinvent yourself. Isn't life grand!

Debi--
Your sadness, yet at the same time, a seething anger are plainly apparent in this short piece. Is this "She" you speak to a specific she, or merely all the "Not-you's", whose life paths have taken them elsewhere than yours did? Be cautious, my friend, of anger and of envy; you have qualities those who've lived easy lives can never approach or comprehend, but it's equally true that you don't know what they've conquered to get where they are; yours may be the next silken pillow, right around the bend, if you do not yield to hate!

I think this would make a great song. Do you have music you could put it to? You might want to make it longer. I could relate to your words. Thank you.

I get a strong sense of regret and worry from this poem, especially from the specific mention of slippers beside a bed. The vague imagery is very mysterious and works very well for the poem. It's just very emotional, personal, and honest. Definitely keep up the good work!
