Balloons

Balloons

A Poem by Deborah Leah Krempa

Sending up balloons

Setting them free

In memory of you

My darling son

I did just that not so long ago

At the time of your passing

Now here I am once more

Sending up balloons

Setting them free

For your three little nephews

Who are in foster care

In hopes that they come home soon

Such darling little guys

Brendan, he has your sky blue eyes

Cute as a button, he just turned five

The twins Alan and Alex are almost two

They are so cuddly and loveable it's true

Just like you when you were a boy

Brings to my heart such wonderful joy

I wish you could have known them

So here I am

Spending some quiet time alone

Sending up balloons

Setting them free

Very emotional. You nailed it again with this work. Love the flow of your free verse as well.

Powerful, emotional, and full of love. You gave me chills and brought tears to my eyes. I love the imagery with the balloons sending your prayers to the heavens. Nicely written.

A very gifted writer of emotions. I really like this piece. It is as if you are attaching your feelings and thoughts to the balloons and releasing them to transcend time and space to be delivered to someone that you cannot contact in another way. Beautiful.

Interesting that you chose to rhyme part and free verse part of this. Personally, I think it would have been stronger without the rhyme. Particularly this line,"They are so cuddly and loveable it's true". The "it's true" at the end sounds contrived and I believe it cheapens the deeper emotion that the rest of the piece carries. This could be a very powerful piece with a wee bit of editing. But this is just my opinion. But you know you can always trust me for an honest one of those. It does not change the fact that you are one of the sweetest people I know and you have my undying admiration for your strength and courage as an individual; one who has been through so much and still retains such dignity. You are a hero in my book. I just thought I'd tell you that.

Your writing, Debi, has depths to it that my earlier readings did not reveal. You have given me today a valuable lesson. Your mournful tone, even in the midst of exulting over your grandchildren, cannot be denied. This is a truly beautiful piece, on so many levels. Thank you.
