A Gem So Rare

A Gem So Rare

A Poem by Deborah Leah Krempa
"

Dedicated to my son (Robert) killed by a drunk driver 4/15/07.

"

Just some distant

Memories

Of my son

I recall the bloody noses

He use to get

As a small child

For no apparent reason

Maybe he just sneezed too much

I recall him walking

In his sleep

Many times he use to scare me

It just happened that way

One time he woke up

And tried to leave the house

He couldn't unlock the screendoor

I would tell him to go back to bed

And off he would go

I recall when he went through

The changing of his voice

The high pitches

Use to drive me crazy sometimes

I recall the way he use to slouch

I would tell him to sit up straight

Shoulder's back

Or you'll have a hunched back

I recall the way he got engrossed

In the television shows

No use in trying to get his attention

Maybe during a commercial break

If you were lucky

I recall the time he cut his hair

During his first year of school

It took a while to grow out

Quite naturally

I recall the way he liked his tea

Piping hot with a little cream

A touch of sugar

Perhaps a hint of lemon

He loved the rind

And celery leaves

I recall his laughter

And his smile

So much like my dad

A grin from ear to ear

I recall those sky blue eyes

So bright

I recall when he was small

Tucking him in bed at night

Him saying his prayers

My son

He was a gem so rare

That was a beautiful remembrance of the love of your life. The poem it self had a pleasant cadence and was a good read. The glimps into your heart was precious. When my life was hanging in the balance after being hit by a drunk driver I wonder what my mom thought. We could not really talk about it for the trauma was to much for her...sorry, I'm rambling. Thank you for sharing. Barb

This was such a great tribute to your son.. so sad he had to be taken in such a way.. maybe a special angel out there somewhere? They say only the good die young.. but then we still feel sadly.. here you have so much happiness and great memories of him.. that is truly what should be remembered.. such a big heart to write with so much love! Great work.. this one is truly profound!

What a beautifully rendered expression of a loss so deep. I love the way you used the details to fill in the story and let us glimpse him as the boy he was, not just as someone abstract that you lost. That brings it home, and I imagine it helps heal the brief. The emotional impact is profound. He was a gem, but so is his mom, for being able to paint so vivid a picture to immortalize his time on earth. Truly.

For now you have your sweet memories, but one day you'll be with him.

This made me cry. There are very few pieces of writing I have ever read that made me cry. One of them was Charles Dickens, A Childs Dream of a Star. But I relate (as much as I can) and empathize with you here. I used to get those bloody noses as a kid for no reason myself. I wonder if there's ever been a study? Hmmm I remember I would hold my head back and put cold towels on my forehead. Oh, and since this made me think of it, you must go read Charles Dickens A Childs Dream of a Star if you haven't, I am positive it is online somewhere. You will not be sorry. This was a wonderful, touching read!
