When Betty Met Jimmy

When Betty Met Jimmy

A Story by Deborah Leah Krempa

Came World War II

Pat reenlisted in the Navy

He went off to fight in the war

Melba stayed home and worked

Bought a house with her savings

Jack and Ronald also went off to war

Jack joined the Marine Corps

Ronald joined the Air Force

Betty worked as a waitress for a spell

She met a young man named Frank

He was handsome and daring

An Army man

Betty and Frank got married

On their honeymoon he got drunk

And beat her up

He was very mean to her

They were only married a short time

When he was called overseas

To fight in the war

Not long after his departure

Betty received a letter from Frank

Saying he met another girl overseas

He wanted an anullment

So he could marry his new sweetheart

Betty was hurt and humiliated

She divorced Frank right away

Betty met a lady named Marguerite

She owned a local tavern in town

Marguerite and Betty became good friends

Betty came and lived with her and her husband George

She did housework and chores for room and board

Marguerite had connections in the local Burlesque Show

Where Betty got a job singing and dancing on stage

Everyone liked Betty Eileen

She was sweet, innocent and shy

With the voice of a hummingbird

And a figure like Gypsy Rose Lee

Whenever Betty got up on the stage

There was always a hush in the room

All eyes were on her

She crooned her audience with her natural talent

Betty loved to watch the slap stick comedy acts

She loved to play the guitar

Sometimes she would sit in with the band

She was on the road to stardom

Betty took a second job working in a glass factory

There she met a young Sailor named Jimmy

He had a crush on her the very moment

That he first laid eyes on her

She was so beautiful with long dark auburn hair

Eyes of brown and a freckled face

One day she didn't show up for work

Jimmy was looking for her at her work station

Not paying attention to what he was doing

He stuck his hand in the machine

His middle finger was cut off

He didn't notice until the guy next to him fainted

He was off to the hospital

But where was his beautiful Betty Eileen

A few days later she showed up at work

Jimmy wasn't about to let her get away

He asked her out to dinner and a movie

She consented and they had a good time

Jimmy left his wallet behind at the tavern

Betty found it and saved it for him

The next time they met he was so surprized

Most girls he met weren't so honest as she

Not only was she pretty she was smart too

They fell in love and married

Within a year Betty became pregnant

But she miscarried time and again

Often she had to be bedridden

Finally she had a baby girl named Barbara

A bouncy blonde haired little girl

Chubby cheeks and dimples too

Sometimes they called her "Butterball"

After Barbie was born

Betty miscarried a few more times

Then she gave birth to their second child

Another little girl named Deborah

After Debbie was born

Betty could have no more children

Jimmy often cried

Sometimes he drank too much

Times were tough for them financially

Emotionally they were both drained

From all the heartache they went through

Still they were quite happy with their little family
