Behind The Mask

Behind The Mask

A Poem by Deborah Leah Krempa

Behind The Mask

It's all a charade

This mask that I wear

All the glamor is just a facade

Search deep into my eyes

Can you see through me

To the very heart and soul of me

The cold lonliness I feel

The sadness and the pain

Behind the mask

I liked this piece, it was well written. It expresses so much of how we, as humans, hide our pain and hurt away, and put on a facade for the whole world to see, never letting anyone know what we truly feel inside. But we long to let down our guard, to reveal what is behind our masques.

'Search deep into my eyes
Can you see through me
To the very heart and soul of me'

We all long to have someone who knows us and accepts us, even with the inner demons we hide; someone who can see on the outside the pain and hurt we feel on the inside. Again, very well written.

This is terrific. In the mid 1500's, the wealthy families of Venice (about 50 in all) wore masks in public....all the time. They felt that because their true identity was hidden, then they were completely unemcumbered in their actions. They could do and say whatever they wanted. We sometimes were masks too...just as you have described here. One to hide our true feelings...our hurt. We put it on to gloss over...the flavor of hurt for the day. Beautiful disclosure.
