Dodging bulletsA Poem by Deborah Leah KrempaYou can certainly tell it's summer in the city The wannabe's and the gangs are walking the streets standing on the corners stopping up traffic as the cars pass by Wearing their colors and their handkerchiefs Running like a pack of restless thieves Toting their guns and their knives All the good people in their houses they hide too scared to sit on their own front porch or take a walk to the corner store to buy a bottle of pop or pack of cigarettes parents too afraid or to let their little children go out to play in their own backyard it's such a rotten shame to get caught up in this game So you know what I'm ready to dodge the bullets And sit out on my front porch I might even walk to the store I might get shot in the back Or some fool might cut me with his pocketknife I don't give a damn anymore Because I'm not afraid to die
