Just A Bit Of History, As I See It...

Just A Bit Of History, As I See It...

A Poem by Deborah Leah Krempa

From the east the explorers came, they that were lost at sea. From across the great waters they came on a triangle of ships, bearing gifts and slaves. They came to what we the Tslagi, the Cherokee people call Turtle Island searching for the promised land. Rich in milk and honey. They came in droves searching for the fountain of youth, but never fou...nd it to this very day. For it was hidden deep in the earth's mountains, rocks, valleys and streams. They stole from the rivers of life where lay precious gold shimmering in the sunlight. The gold was bountiful like tiny pebbles sparkling and glistening in the sands. They were blinded by it's light. For they had found fool's gold.

It was the protecting blanket, the great shield of the rivers of life. The waterfalls they sparkled of it. They came here to this sacred place and they stole it from the land. And, so they paved roads with the bounty of it and lined their pockets with silver and gold nuggets. They built the tallest of buildings, statues, fine jewelry and drinking cups. They stole from the land and never gave anything back to mother earth. They became as drunken men, lustful and greedy. With greed comes corruption of the soul. Their minds became polluted with their lust for the gold dust. They panned the rivers of life until there was no more to be found.

Thus, they built a fire and they melted it and made coins out of it. They raped the earth of her splendor and her beauty. They, the explorers came here, they that were lost at sea. They filled an unquenchable thirst, a desire, a lust for want of more of this precious sacred medicine stone. They could never get their bellies full enough, for they were blinded by it's light. They became as mad men with the gold fever
