Her Veneer

Her Veneer

A Poem by Debby Carlson

She can spread herself open and only feel
the surface,and on that -
will not allow  the trickle of a tear
to stain her veneer: iron maiden she is.
She keeps life out.

The sun sets and rises with its red glow
and bright rays, but she walks between them-
her tip-toes scrape the sides of life
but there is no pain: for she has no mercy,
Not even for herself.

'She keeps life out' is such a sad and striking line and your poem as a whole really talks to me about the self-adhered veneer we all attach to ourselves.

It is well written...
While reading it was a cruel emotion...
