Lillith (2)

A Chapter by Jay S

The weeks that had passed since the bodies were found felt so meaningless.

The thought of Anya and Flynn actually killing somebody was too much. They were the two most gentle people in the world, but the multitude of bodies that were found countered that opinion. Even worse, they were presumed to be dead. My two best friends in the whole world might be dead. I was completely gone from reality. I spent most of my time lying in my room, and thinking.

I drove around town in my new car and blasted my music. I couldn’t help but drive by Flynn and Anya's houses, I could see the yellow tape surrounding the homes and I saw something, something that I don’t think the police even cared to investigate. I saw footprints 1 that led from the direction of the school, to just about 30 feet from the home. They seemed to come to a skidding stop, then messily sprint away. This may have been a small detail, but it meant something, it meant that one of them was still alive, and that was enough to spring me back to life.

I ran to my car and sped home. I now knew something no one else knew, or could ever know. When I went to sleep that night, nothing could shake the thought of Anya and Flynn being alive, the thought that they may, somehow come back and everything would go back to the way it used to be. Somewhere deep down I knew that that could never happen, but I still deluded myself with the thought of normality.

That night I dreamt of the way things used to be. The way it was before all this madness started. I dreamt of Anya and Flynn, and of the school. I saw the school and the place that we always hung out. I saw us playing cards and I saw Anya and Flynn teasing one another. It was what I wanted most, but what I would never receive.

The next few days I was the happiest person on the planet, for I knew my friends were alive. I ate more, and slept better. I talked with more life. I was renewed.
