Last Breath(Not The End)

Last Breath(Not The End)

A Poem by The Rock And Roll Cowboy(REBEL WITH A CAUSE)

With bare feet

I step with conviction

Along stepping stones

Molded from sin.

A layer of moss

My only protection

From burning my skin.

To leave the path

Would wash my soul away

In the rage of unholy water

The stones inhabit.

Patience is my compass

In search for solid ground,

Awaiting the water to narrow

I take a leap of faith

Landing on a sandy shore

Where my feet sink

A cool six inches

With every thankful stride…

Bad news, I was lost;

Good news, I was in paradise,

Or a form of.

When I reached

The lush green of a forest

The sticks and stones

Abused my feet like a peasant

While my eyes

Were treated like a king

Admiring his treasures.

There was calm,

I felt peace

Till the call of the wild

Shattered my serenity

Like a wine glass

Against a wall.

Perched upon the remains

Of a tree cut down

In its prime

I seek the howl that reminded me

Why hearts ache.

Then fur as white as snow

Approached like the fury of a storm

With no remorse in its snarl

Face to face

I saw no compassion in its eyes

But somehow read its mind

Making me realize

Fear works both ways.

When its black haired companion

Joined in

I knew this was the end.

Taking a deep breath

 I closed my eyes

And let the dark be my guide

To the light.

So much like nightmare. The struggle is always far from over. The road to freedom seems non-existent. Yet, the will never surrenders. In the absence of light, darkness could be the guide to find one single spark. So much like life too. When there's nowhere else to go, there's still hope to hold on to.

My fave line would be the last one. Keep writing.

While my eyes were treated like a king. I LOVE THAT! I enjoyed the dichotomy in this piece. Like no one but you can do. :0) I'm sorry it's take me so long to get here. I've been so buried. I'm enjoying my Saturday reading. Pleasant to see your work. :0)

"I closed my eyes
And let the dark be my guide
To the light."

Awesome. Is resignation peace? Is it or when is it "right" to resign. Beautiful description. Very thought provoking piece.

Why is it that we can never hold to the peace? We feel it, we breathe it in, and it's gone a just a small moment. Yet, we never cease searching for just that one quiet breath. Beautifully written.

I'm not sure I quite understand all of this but I like it. Does that make sense? I don't know but even though I don't quite grasp what's going on I still like it. I like the flow and the word choices. Basically I like the way it sounds. You did a great job.

This is a great piece. I love the use of the dark and the light and the description of your eyes being treated like a king...just wonderful imagery!

An extraordinary mix of visuals, a distortion of light and dark, right and wrong, an ongoing search for someone, somewhere peaceful, loving, illuminating.

A fine, fine poem, Dale .. 'I closed my eyes ~ And let the dark be my guide ~ To the light.'

I love this poem, I think it almost mimics our styles. I know there is a deep metaphor, a gem hidden in this wonderful work. Dale always crafts his poems that way. However, I would need to read it more than once to find that answer, as it is a very deep and penetrating piece of work. nice job as always.

Very vivid imagry....with a dreamlike quality that makes me feel that waking may not erase the danger and perhaps only magnify it.
Thought provoking, will have to analyze it some more:)
