Megadeth

Megadeth

A Poem by The Rock And Roll Cowboy(REBEL WITH A CAUSE)
"

Written for the band of the Century Contest

"

Growing up in the eighties

A time when so many styles

Of music shined through

I was blessed with variety

But metal captured my soul.

Within that realm one band stood out

From the moment I first heard them

I felt the magic in there sound.

Hard driving guitars and pounding drums

Were done with a certain style and flare

That separated them from the rest

And why they were called

The state of the art speed metal band.

While this style of music was known

For devil worship and bloodshed

Which was always and act

Dave and his gang took it further

With their take on political corruption

And knocks on those societies standards.

Two things that I always stood against.

With bold songs like “Symphony Of Destruction”

“Foreclosure Of A Dream” and “Gears Of War”

They exposed the greed and power

Inside the White house.

Ironically their best albums came

When a Republican was in charge.

They even showed a sense of whimsy

With great lines like,

“Military Intelligence,

Two words combined that don’t make sense.”*

Even receiving a special award

From the World Wildlife Federation

For the song “Countdown to Extinction”.

Like many Metal bands

No one thought they’d last

Or be so successful

Yet two decades later

They headline their own festival.

* These are lyrics from the song Hanger 18 written and recorded by Megadeth.

Ok didn't listen to Megadeth but I did see one of those documentary things on them. Quite and interesting band. I do like any band that pushes the envelope. As for the whole devil worship thing you know we all secretly tried to listen to the songs backwards to see if there was hidden messages. Never heard them on any of mine lol. Ok this was an awesome piece very well thought out. I know they are still rocking after all this time so I give my kudos to them and you for an awesome tribute poem.

That song is an anti-suicide song... but I understand. Thank you for reading,
Love Megadeth...love love love them. This is a great tribute. You know I had to scroll through, like, 37 pages before I found it ;-) Worth the carpal tunnel. Great piece, Dale.

Ah, you just took me back to high school, sitting around in someone's dark basement listening to tapes and posters on the wall. Megadeath always seemed to be one of them going. They weren't my favorite although I love "Symphony of Destruction". It makes me think about all those others that were great - Iron Maiden, Anthrax - great poem about a band you obviously still are into. I'm glad to know they are still going strong.

Very cool. I've never heard their songs, but I've hard of them. You really know your stuff about this band... Of course you do, they're you're faves! Anyways this was really really good. Not a structured rhyming poem, just your thoughts on one of your favorite bands. Good luck in the contest, and great job :]

Wow.. what a blast from the past!!! Brilliantly written.. for one of my younger brother's favorite groups back in the 80's.. (also remember him blaring the amp with his guitar.. could hear it all the way up the street.. self-taught and would play to these guys as well as Metallica, AC/DC and so many others). This write brought back alot of memories.. they certainly did have alot of background and causes as well. Ah.. the days of dressing in black.. wearing Jack Daniels tshirts.. as well as many other tees reflecting rock groups! (I had a year or two of being a rebel) You should send this to them.. I'm sure they would be delighted!!! =)

Great writing! I too love 80's music but sorry to say I dont listen to MEGADETH. I can say that when I met my husband he was wearing one of thier T-shirts and a dew rag with skeletons on it. Makes me want to write alittle something for Bon Jovi!! This was so unique!
