Jim Valik, P.I.- chapter two

A little more build up to the story

"

I persuaded both detectives to grab a cup of coffee first figuring it would relax them a bit and give me the upper hand in this meeting.  I already could tell what it was going be about but wasn’t sure just what they knew and how.  I needed any advantage I could get.

Steve Ferra was a long time veteran on the force.  Fifty-one an already had thinning gray hair that he had saved into a crew cut.              He was also a bit out of shape as his gut line peaked through his cheap suit.  His partner Andrew Scott was considerably younger.  Thirty-two, dark toned skin with a full head of curly hair.  It was east to see he was well built under the suit.  I was six foot two and Scotts had bout an inch on me while Ferra had to be a couple inches shy of six foot.

Scott was transferred to homicide almost 8 months ago from what everyone down at the stations affectionately called the narc division.  As most cops do they don’t like me because of my line of work yet we always get along.  It was most certainly a love hate relationship; then again that is how most of mine can be described.  It certainly applied to my ex-wife.

“By the way gentleman this is my neighbor Dave Cooper.  Dave this is…” I was rudely cut off by Ferra.

“Yeah charmed we are sure. Look we need to speak alone so you mind getting lost.”  Ferra growled.

I caught up with Dave before he bolted out the door.  “Guess I’m not the only one you rub the wrong way.” Snickering.

“Yeah save it for the stand up act.”  The hurt in his voice was loud and clear.  I always thought he was a tad bit sensitive, especially for a guy.

“Look do me a favor while I handle riff and raff.  Get on the computer and work your magic to see what you can find on the name Furfur.  Anything you can find no matter how obscure it may seem.”

I shut the door before he could reply and went back to the table to begin what I was sure would be a delightful conversation.

“So what can I do for a couple of the cities finest?”  Using my mocking tone to cover the anxiety I was feeling.

“Cut the crap,” replied Stevens.  “I am sure you read in the paper bout the bodies being burned alive.  Well surprise surprise that witnesses described your car as being in the vicinity.  So what kind of investigating were you doing in the industrial part of town?”

“Better yet,” Ferra interjected, “ just confess to the crime and save us the pain of finding out for ourselves.  You know help a couple of the cities finest.”  His breathe smelling of sarcasm.

“Look I have no idea what you are talking bout.  Obviously it was a car similar to mine.”

“Yeah just like the past oh I don’t know 20 times your vehicle has been spotted near one of these homicidal rituals.”  Ferra shot back.

“Hey I know you guys don’t like what I do for a living but to keep trying to pin things on me just to have a suspect is bullshit.”

Ferra grabbed my write wrist twisting it just enough to inject pain.  “No, what’s bullshit is these games you are playing.  You can bet I will be watching you closely cause as far as I’m concerned you are a suspect.  I tried to give you the benefit of the doubt before but know I’m on your a*s.”

Jerking my arm away as he eased up, “Well you know you’ll have to buy me dinner before I’ll give up my virginity.”

“Watch yourself Jim.”  Ferra was beat red as he stood hustling for the door.  “Lets go.” He ordered to his partner.

After they were long gone I decided a little nap was in order before my real day began.  It didn’t last long for I was awakened by a nightmare of what happened the night before.   I made more coffee and began looking over the cheating spouse case I had been working on during my normal hours.  I was meeting my client in a couple hours and need to make sure I had all my findings in order.

Before I headed out the door I called Dave to see what he found out about the name I gave him.

“I’ve uncovered a bit but am still looking.  You wanted me to be through right.”

“Yeah Yeah.  Just meet me over hear round eight o’clock tonight.’

“Look Jim I still don’t understand why you do this.  I mean you are just looking for trouble.”

“I’ve told you before, I need to find the trouble before it finds me.”

Wow! I see so much growth in your writing style. This again was gripping, yet had some good humorous quips. I chuckled quite a few times. The story line is intriguing. It clipped along at a steady pace and held my attention. Very good work!

You are very talented and should continue with this. It pulls you in and holds your attention. Good flow to the conversations. Not chopped up.

Awesome this one is spectacular you are laying out your characters nicely. I am hooked completely now. I hope there will be a chapter three. You feel like you are in the room watching the conversation play out. I can't wait to find out what is going to happen.
