The Great Unknown Me

The Great Unknown Me

A Poem by The Rock And Roll Cowboy(REBEL WITH A CAUSE)

My heartbeat is like two stones knocking together

Yet the red ink still seeps from each and every thump.

I feel the need to lie on a bed of roses

Even though I realize the thorns are lost lovers.

I find comfort in crawling across barren land

Just so my soul will thirst for humanity’s river.

There is an urge deep inside of animalistic nature

That wants to play in the lion’s den without reason or rhyme.

Every time I wonder why others have trouble understanding me

I come to the realization that my human psyche is a mystery to me.

Kind of the universal challenge to humanity, huh?
Not gonna go on a religious rant or anything because I'm not typically a religious person. But whoever managed to build everything and put us here was a bit of a smartass. Filling the earth with so many questions and hardly giving us half the capacity that we need to understand them. Or even the basic human need to understand ourselves, why we do what we do, constantly looking for that bit of inner peace.
Anyway. I'm off topic. Loved this piece, well written. I like how you ended the last two lines with the same word, they really play off of each other and that showed a certain degree of unity. Bravo. Keep it up.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and insights, really glad you enjoyed the poem.
Trying to understand the human psyche is like trying to understand God. They are both great mysteries. And why do we feel so much in the heart? It's as if it has a mind of it's own. It doesn't really break, but why does it feel so empty vacant and full of ache? The heart in itself is a great cryptogram because of this very reason. Maybe the soul is in the heart, as they say. "Even in death, the heart will go on...."

That is a great way of looking at it… thank you for sharing you deep insight.
Deep, and rich in meaning. Like Corset, I fell face first into verses 3 through 5, and the rest just brought it home. Really, felt this piece.

Thank you for sharing.

You had me at 'heartbeat'...

A beautiful poem. Know thyself, love thyself. There is much to adore in you.

Yes that was a very lovely quote in fact.
The Great unknown me... I guess it is hard to really know ourselves and other totally and I know the feeling of finding comfort in crawling across barren land Just so my soul will thirst for humanity's river. That wants to play in the lion's den without reason or rhyme. Our animistic nature and need for excitement. Great poem!

Why thank you Jacob, I whole heartedly agree with you.
This is deeper than the other pieces of yours that I have read.. This one made me feel sad, lost, searching.. (did you mean "though" instead of thou?) Moving piece sir..
