Behind the Velvet Curtains

Behind the Velvet Curtains

A Poem by devon

Mama was an actress,

So to speak.

And play the part she did,

Never allowing her true feelings a peek.

She was as tough as a nail,

But it was only a shell.

Mama didn’t let anyone know

On the inside, she was going through Hell.

Her smile was always

Permanent, as bright as the day.

Nobody knew that Mama’s

Thoughts were so dark and dismayed.

And she always told me

“Don’t care about what other people say”,

Oh, but did Mama care!

It was the reason for putting on her play.

We never would have guessed

Mama was living in a cage.

The only reason I know,

Is because I saw her crying backstage.

It takes heart to listen...
and sometimes breaks it.

Awww. That's sad and beautifully written at the same time. It flows so elegantly and its easy to understand.

I can't pick out a bad stanza or one that isn't as good as the others because they are all so good! Well done!
