Would I Have Known You in Braille?

Would I Have Known You in Braille?

A Poem by devon

I traced your perfect face

As if I were a blind kid

Reading lines of classical literature

On the freckled Braille of your skin

The familiar quirks of your face

Are not unfamiliar to me

A saintly smile enclosed by lips

Which kiss with no such innocence,

Curious eyes ringed with lack of sleep

On Sunday mornings following a late Saturday night

The mountains and valleys

Of your spine’s geography were

Too difficult to map out

Scars etched a mystery novel

Onto your flesh

So deep, I could not decipher

A birthmark colored aligned

With the blue vein at your throat

And left me wondering

If your mother had told you the same story as mine

Of an angel’s pure lips placing one single

Burning kiss and leaving a mark of proof you’re in

Heavenly favor

If only I had known the language

Of those without sight

Maybe I would have learned more quickly

Who you really were

Underneath all that skin
