The Gift

The Gift

A Poem by perfectlymetiKulous

Today, I thought of you.
I missed the very essence of you that
Lit the darkest part of me with your light
And the desolation of my heart, the calm that stayed my love
Roared to a blissful storm and consumed the emptiness with unexplained ecstasy.

Leaving you or
Allowing this love to invade me
Seemed my only options.
And I knew I could never leave.
I could trek the wide world alone;
Your love was the gift that
I could never leave behind.

The dark has light,
The emptiness filled,
The storm rages on.
These gifts you've given me,
I give to you,
Unconditionally.
Because before you,
I can't remember.
Because after you,
I can't fathom.

Today, I thought of you.
I wanted to give your darkness light,
Fill the parts of you that lay empty,
To create our very own perfect storm.

I love this mucho. It inspires a few ideas... My favorite part about this is the underlying concept that loving someone is a gift in and of itself. Which is what makes heartache so painful- all we want to do is love the one that hurts us, but they refuse us.
I especially like the way you began the poem with "I thought of you today". In my experience, its those spontaneous, unbidden thoughts that remind us of the ones we love that taste the best.

I was very moved by this piece. Something about it tugged at my heart strings. It is very well written, the punctuation gives it a good flow.

Wow, I believed I loved like that once and only once and then it was over. You have awakened in me an old memory of how I loved and lost. Thank you!
