Camouflage
A Poem by
David P. Eckert
An unusual subject for me. How did we end up on an African Savannah? Beats me.
Camouflage
Blending, crouching
in parched grass
its eyes narrowed
muscles coiled
the big cat waits.
Zebras, their stripes pointing,
weaving
kaleidoscopic
in misdirection
gallop at full thunder
as each life relies
on speed and subterfuge.
The cat uncoils,
pursuit begun
with great bounding strides
eyes searching the stripes
choosing the one shape
for claws to launch and strike
But eyes betray the hunter -
his silent unseen wait
to be repeated
while striped evaders
groups of moving camouflage
have earned another day.

That is a very vivid poem and I felt like I was watching the event unfold before my eyes.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and am envious of your beautiful talent and skills.

I've read the the black on white stripes of the Zebra serve to confuse an attacking predator when they run. I've always wondered; are Zebras black on white, or white on black!
Marvelous piece, David!

This poem reminds how truely amazing and cunning nature can be.....i think humans like to flock in like minded clumps for similar reasons...especially younger humans...less confident to stand alone....
yes, i love their coats!.....closest thing to unicorns lol...no horn but what horse can boast both ends of the spectrum?
Great chase!

Good job Mr. Eckert, Dave or David. I like short ones like this, kinda my own style. I can speak from experience being a white tiger, it's stinkin' hard to keep hidden in the jungle. The green snakes have the best of it they blend right into the fauna. I like this because it is simple, yet portrays a common experience on the African plains. People never tire of watching these things on Animal Planet, and I doubt they will tire of reading of such pictures of nature as this, especially when they are written to skillfully. I bow to you, send me more like this one when you write them :)

first, let me say I am new to your work. that is my loss. but I intend to stop short changing myself and read more.
I agree with my compadres below. great visual. great movement. and great story telling.
as each life relies
On speed and subterfuge
subterfuge is one of my favorite words. and these lines could be applied to our life here on this stage..
your work reads like classics with which I should already be familiar.
thank you
