In Sickness and Health, Poverty and Wealth

In Sickness and Health, Poverty and Wealth

Old boy pols center, left and right,

in sickness and in health,

in poverty and wealth,

the boys of D.C. hold the cards.

It’s hard to wait, to enervate

our bored stiff minds

with vanilla choices.

Our inner voices

call for more than oat meal or oat bran,

more than hot cakes with jam,

more than elephants

with donkey brothers

and independent others shouting

more of the same, the same, the same.

Pull a lever, pop a chad

with no hope of ever changing,

the range of motion never ranging

past an inch of middle.

Hey diddle the cow cried

before he died of moon-staring,

the cat and fiddle not caring

there’s no repairing

the earthquake fissure

between the haves and the nots,

the rich dish stealing the spoon

as we swoon in blind hunger,

sick with apathetic starvation

in our gold-paved split nation.

Yes, once again, the lesser of two evils. Two people will fight it out by spiewing what they think we want to hear, while trying their best to keep their own secrets hidden - and uncover their opponents skelletons. Great write, my friend. Very enjoyable piece.

You seem to have your finger on the pulse of DC on this one David. The state of affairs in the capitol now are somewhat of a joke now. Great write with some wit thrown in too. T

first off, I really like the picture after the poem. As there is no fence to be seen in the picture that I can see, it really adds to the poem, especially after the read. Nice to save the visual for after the read and not spoil it by using the pic as the poem's avatar.now to the poem itself. You've covered a lot of capital ground on this one. liked the plain jane 'vanilla choices'. Very accurate. I agree with Lionel that weaving the old hey diddle diddle imagery into the piece really adds another level to it. It didn't attempt to go overboard with the idea too much and really solidifies the piece.as we've seen in the past days, they can work around the clock and still not get anything accomplished. Until the people realize that we're the ones keeping these impostors in office by blindly voting straight republican or straight democrat every election and not taking the time to learn where the candidates stand on important issues, things will not be changing for the better any time soon. Though even learning the candidates can be seen as a waste of time these days as most of them are spineless chameleons and weather vanes...thanks for sending this one my way.

i like the hey diddle diddle metaphor of today's politics. very effective, because politics is nonsense just like the hey diddle is nonsense. but the poem itself is potent in its message.
