Best at Best

Best at Best

A Poem by Not here

There's nothing that can stop him, it seems.
There's nothing holding him from his dreams.
There's nothing in this world he can't own.
No goal he can't reach, no skill he can't hone.
But no matter how much to you he seems blessed,
the best of men are just men at best.

We all are striving for goals and dreams,
doing our best on the balance beams.
We fall off, scrape our knee, cry and bleed;
how we get up will decide if we succeed.
Everybody in the world is working too;
everybody in the world just like you
is working hard, harder, hardest still.
Even if they don't quite get the thrill
that they hoped for, they still rock and roll.
Guitars blaring in their head, while the whole
world is watching from below, wishing they
could do what the professionals do today.
Where does the journey end?
Where did it start?
How much guts does it take
to look smart?
How much pain does it take to cover
all the fears inside they discover?
Even when they are rocking that gold vest,
just remember that the best of men are men at best.

There's nothing that can stop her, it seems.
There's nothing holding her from her dreams.
There's nothing in this world she can't own.
No goal she can't reach, no skill she can't hone.
But even if to you she seems so very blessed,
the best of women are just women at best.

She's so very pretty, so very appealing;
when she goes walking by the girls start squealing.
To some she is an idol, to some she is a prize,
to others she is something on which they could feast their eyes.
But to everybody, it seems that she is now
a person that when she walks by everyone says, "Wow!"
They see the exterior, and some even see the smiles.
Some people see the person, but nobody sees the miles
she has put into herself and into all of her work.
Other people want attention so they get on up and twerk.
She has never been like that, though, she has never been that way.
Instead of getting attention, she suffers everyday.
Every night she goes to sleep and cries, her pillow soaks.
She wakes up in the morning, puts on make up, drinks some cokes.
She needs the caffeine in the morning, something stronger later.
What else is she to do to hide the pain that's getting greater?
No one is there to listen, and with all the expectations
she is running out of time to take a small vacation.
Sleeping at night used to be a way to relieve stress;
nowadays if she does not cry she feels very blessed.
Even though she looks so perfect, she is such a mess.
In the end, the best of women are women at best.
There's nothing that can stop him, it seems.
There's nothing holding him from his dreams.
There's nothing in this world he can't own.
No goal he can't reach, no skill he can't hone.

There's nothing that can stop her, it seems.
There's nothing holding her from her dreams.
There's nothing in this world she can't own.
No goal she can't reach, no skill she can't hone.

But no matter how much to you he seems blessed,
the best of the men are just men at best.

But even if to you she seems so very blessed,
the best of women are just women at best.

thank you very much :)
The best people ARE still just people at best and worst. The more successful someone is, the more people expect from them. It's sad that we do not allow for mistakes in our idols or they become a point of ridicule. You did a great job of getting the vulnerabilities across. I also liked the way you italicized the female roles. I'd just be careful of size so that one is not larger than the other in appearance. Some might interpret it as women being less. I know that is not your intent here, but then again I still like men opening doors and pulling out chairs...lol. As you so tactfully put it, everybody has their crap, it's all in the way they deal with it.
One of your best poems to date!

Dante: This is a beautiful poem filled with so much beautiful imagery, so many lines to quote. My favorite of yours. It really touched me, with great imagery, you are so talented! To show what we don't see, your observations in this one are truly powerful and it made me think first of my husband, then so many friends, humanity, woman working for their children on overload, too many looking at the wrong things, not the true essense and emotions inside, maybe feeling unappreciated, unfulfilled, but then you send a lovely uplifting message too. Bravo! Great work & I thank you so much. Dale

Dante: It's amazing....truly.
A man and woman on similar paths with questions of life. Maybe they should just get together since two negatives make a positive. Interesting concept, but that's not new to your work. Thanks for sharing

no problem, thanks for reading :)
Eminem is back! Just kidding, but not really. I especially like the stanza that talks about the subjugation of the young woman. Though that's not the source of her pain, having to put on a facade every day to hide what you're going through has to make the struggle that much tougher. What's the most tragic about this is that she gets so much attention, but not the attention that she needs. I know I'm focusing on one small part, but that's the part that spoke to me the most. I really enjoyed it.
