Childhood Memories

Childhood is a precious moment in life.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Playing out in the soft green grass

Shoes off, hair is a mess

The wind blows and I run with unending energy

The summer sun tans my skin and illuminates my path

My tree house awaits me and my friends

 

Trips to grandma’s house down the road

Baking cookies and eating them too

Playing games and reading funny stories

Singing songs at the top of our lungs

And bedtime prayer during the setting of the sun

 

Playing baseball at the park and shooting some hoops

Sliding down the slides and racing daddy across the monkey bars

Kicking the soccer ball around the field

Shooting a goal past grandpa

Climbing the trees trying to catch the squirrels

 

Playing dress-up with mommy and trying on shoes

Smearing lipstick on our faces

Lots of jewelry around our necks and drinking tea

Pretending to be a princess and mommy is the queen

Daddy comes home and he is the king

 

Playing tag with my brother and hide and seek

Hiding behind the door waiting to scare him

Racing our matchbox cars across the driveway

I always had to win

But no matter what, even when we fight, I’ll always love him

 

Dressing up my puppy, in my fashionable doll clothes

Putting his ears into a fancy bow and sliding on tiny shoes

Making him prance around like he was in a parade

Chasing my cat around the house trying to give him a bath

Even though I knew he didn’t like water I tried it anyway

 

 

I’m much older now and look back on these times.

My childhood was special and I fondly cherish it

My mom and dad are still very much a part of life

And grandma and grandpa too

But I’m not the little girl anymore with ribbons in my hair

Or with frilly dresses and shiny shoes.

I’m grown and moving on in life, experiencing many things

But I will never forget my childhood no matter what this life may bring.

This took me back to my own childhood... especially the part about dressing the dog up and giving the cats baths... I was famous for that, lol... The ending struck me too; I'm not fond of the idea of growing up so much as adapting. The body grows, but the soul merely continues. I like the way you ended it though, never forgetting your childhood, its a grand gift.

This is lovely poem. I can feel warmth and shelter that a child feels before he is exposed to the true reality of the world. I was yearning for it. It has a very important lesson that we should never forget where we came from, usually it's where we will find comfort. At least that's my interpretation lol. Beautiful :)
