The Atom - Opening sceneA Screenplay by DarrinReayIt's an ordinary day in the great city of RoyalRich. That is until a cataclysmic explosion destroys everything - leaving the people of the city fighting for their lives. EXT. DOWNTOWN ROYALRICH - DAY We're flying over the towers of downtown RoyalRich... through the beautiful streets of the urban city. We make our way to the outskirts of the city where we see a small little street where CHILDREN are playing happily - having water fights, playing football on the grass. A typical day. On the side of the road is a sign which reads: "Welcome to RoyalRich, population 3,187,654" ON HOUSE, we push onto a set of doors which open up to reveal a man exiting. This is STEFFEN CYRUS. ON STEFFEN, he walks down the driveway and approaches a beautiful blonde haired woman. This is MICHELLE CYRUS. STEFFEN Hey you. MICHELLE (turns) Hey yourself. STEFFEN All ready for work? MICHELLE (smiles) I am. STEFFEN places a kiss on MICHELLE'S forehead and they have a little cuddle. STEFFEN Well, you have fun. MICHELLE You know I will. ON MICHELLE, she walks passed STEFFEN and jumps into her car, giving him one last smile before she pulls away. STEFFEN POV, the car disappears down the street and seen towering over the city are -- -- TWO LARGE SKYSCRAPERS. ON STEFFEN, he turns and glances over towards a field next to his house, he frowns. ON FIELD, a group of teenagers are drinking and having fun next to a large, oak tree. One of them pulls out a JOINT and sparks it up. This is JAMES CYRUS, he passes it to his friends. He takes a look behind him, his eyes widen. JAMES POV, his father STEFFEN is approaching fast. JAMES S**t... get rid of that now! JAMES grabs the joint and turns to throw it but -- -- STEFFEN is already behind him, he looks down at the joint. STEFFEN Well, well - what do we have here? (takes joint) Is this a joint? JAMES No... it's just a -- He sniffs it and moves his head away, staring at JAMES in disappointment. STEFFEN House. Now. (to friends) Disappear. ON TEENAGERS, they all stand and run across the field. STEFFEN turns and watches JAMES approach the house, he shakes his head. STEFFEN Stupid a*s. He follows. CUT TO: INT. STEFFEN'S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS JAMES takes a seat on the settee, he removes his phone. BEHIND HIM, the door opens and STEFFEN walks in, slamming the door. He walks in front of JAMES and looks down at him, pissed off. STEFFEN Dope, really? Your mother would be ashamed. I am ashamed. I thought you were better than this, James. ON JAMES, he doesn't say a word. Just continues to play on his phone. STEFFEN (under breath) You got to be f*****g kidding me. STEFFEN snatches the phone and places it in his pocket. STEFFEN You look at me while I'm talking to you. I am your father and you will show me respect. JAMES stares, looking into his fathers eyes. STEFFEN Anything you got to say? JAMES I'm sorry, it won't happen again. STEFFEN You make sure it doesn't - and that party you were invited to tonight? Consider yourself uninvited. ON JAMES, his face drops. JAMES Come on... everybody is going there, please! STEFFEN No ifs, ands or buts. Get upstairs and out of my sight. There's a pause. They both stare at each-other. JAMES Well, can I at least have my phone? STEFFEN You get it back tomorrow. JAMES stands up, he throws a temper tantrum and kicks the settee. Then walks towards the door. STEFFEN You leave this house now, don't bother coming back tonight. Beat. ON JAMES, he stares in anger before exiting the house and -- EXT. STREET - CONTINUOUS Walking along the side of the house, picking up a bicycle. He sits on it, places a helmet on his head and peddles down the street. ON WINDOW, STEFFEN watches as JAMES disappears down the street, he shakes his head and -- INT. STEFFEN'S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS Turns around and sits down on the settee, picking up the remote and switching on the television. ON SCREEN, the news channel comes on and in large writing, we see: "BREAKING NEWS - THE BODY OF ELITE SQUAD, THE CIRCLE HAS BEEN FOUND WASHED ASHORE." STEFFEN'S attention is immediately caught. He takes out his phone and dials. STEFFEN Stewart, I've just saw the news. What is this? Whose body? CUT TO: INT. THE CIRCLE, HQ - DAY We are in a white room -- it's full of hi-tech equipment which are being used by men in white suits. An office can be seen at the end of the hall. On the door it reads: "Stewart Turnbull, director of The Circle" INT. STEWART'S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS A man is sat behind a desk, he's dressed in a smart, black suit. This is STEWART. STEWART Two field agents were sent to investigate the mysterious death of a child. We lost communication with them. STEFFEN Whose body has been found? CUT TO: INT. STEFFEN'S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM - DAY STEWART It's Ace Walton. STEFFEN rises from the settee, a look of sorrow on his face. STEFFEN S**t. What about his partner? STEWART MIA, believed to be dead. STEFFEN Who is his partner? SILENCE -- there's a beat. STEWART It's... Gordon. ON STEFFEN, he grips the phone tightly in his grasp and grits his teeth. STEFFEN Why the f**k is this the first I'm hearing about it? STEWART We didn't want to -- STEFFEN Bring me in, let me search for him. STEWART You wanted out of this job, Steffen. I can't just bring you back when the occasion calls for it. STEFFEN I'm not asking to be brought back - all I want are weapons and transport to the island they were investigating. I'll find him. STEWART I understand your emotions but -- There's sudden silence -- but a faint rumbling noise is heard... growing louder. STEFFEN looks at his phone, it reads -- -- NO SIGNAL. He turns, heads towards the house phone and picks it up. NOTHING. STEFFEN What the -- The rumbling noise is heard once more, this time it's OVERHEAD. STEFFEN is alarmed, he heads to his front door and -- EXT. STREET - CONTINUOUS Exits onto the street. STEFFEN POV, the neighbors from the other houses have gathered in the middle of the street, looking up. STEFFEN approaches. STEFFEN What's going on? They all point to the sky. STEFFEN looks up as he sees -- -- A MISSILE. It's flying overhead, directly towards the skyscrapers. STEFFEN James... Michelle... He sprints down the street and towards the city but -- -- BOOM! A point of light fires into a NUCLEAR BLAST. It's BLINDING! ON STEFFEN, he covers his eyes for protection from the blast and the brightness. ON NEIGHBORS, they all cover their eyes - except for one person. Their eyes begins to slowly turn white and melt. Wind, dust and light begins to blow violently through the city, destroying all in its path. One of the neighbors known as POTTER runs over to STEFFEN and helps him to his feet. POTTER Come on, we are leaving! STEFFEN No... my wife, my son! POTTER There's nothing you can do, I'm sorry but we need to go! They both begin to sprint up the street but STEFFEN runs to a nearby driveway and -- - SMASHES a car window, climbing into it. I/E. CAR - CONTINUOUS POTTER climbs inside. POTTER POV, STEFFEN removes wires from inside the car, he begins to hot wire. STEFFEN Come on... come on! The car engine starts, STEFFEN smiles and then pulls out into the street. They begin to drive at full speed, dodging the fleeing people. STEFFEN POV, the mushroom cloud in the rearview mirror rises to an enormous rate. The cloud of smoke gains on them. ON CLOUD OF SMOKE, we see something different about this. It's a different colour. It's -- -- BLUE. POTTER Up the road there's a warehouse, go in there! STEFFEN A warehouse? Are you f*****g kidding me? What the hell is that gonna do! POTTER It has a bunker, it'll be strong enough to withhold the blast! REARVIEW MIRROR, the cloud of smoke is only a mile behind, getting closer by the second. A large warehouse comes into view -- -- MADE OF WOOD. STEFFEN It's f*****g wood! POTTER Trust me and drive through the wall! The car SMASHES into the side of the building -- INT. WAREHOUSE - CONTINUOUS Coming to a stop inside, they both exit. POTTER runs through a doorway. STEFFEN follows and inside the room is -- -- A LARGE, STEEL HATCH. POTTER opens it up: POTTER Quickly, get inside! STEFFEN jumps inside. POTTER follows and just as he closes the hatch -- -- WIND blows through the warehouse, destroying it. INT. BUNKER - CONTINUOUS Both of them drop to the ground, covering themselves in whatever they can find. Bits of debris fall all around them and the lights inside begin to flicker on and off. The lights completely turn off and we -- CUT TO BLACK:
