Chapter Six

Chapter Six

A Chapter by Jessica Fox

I made my way down the stairs and stopped short, Dylan was leaning against the back of the couch. His eyes met mine and then he looked away, his arms were crossed over his broad chest. I heard the lonesome howl of the wolves and felt the hair on the back of my neck prickle. Something was out there and it was hunting our pack.

I looked at Michael, he would not even look at me, and he was hunched over on the couch. A haggard look was on his face, Dylan caught me looking at Michael and I felt the alpha in him stir. The air was electric and a low growl tore from the man on the couch. I rubbed my pounding temples and grabbed the sweatshirt that was draped on the easy chair.

“Boys you can have your little dominance match if you wish, I am going for a walk.” I brushed past Dylan and he grabbed my arm. I looked down at the hand encircling my arm and raised my eyebrows. I stared into his pale icy eyes and he stared into mine.

“You will not go out there alone, I heard Lydia say that it would be your death.” I stared down at his hand and he removed it. His breathing was ragged and he looked over at Michael.

“You are not the boss of me and as I told her, you heard what I said I already died once today.” I leaned in close to Dylan and smiled as he shivered at the nearness of me. I inhaled his scent of wolf and cologne, it was an unusual scent and one day I may actually ask him about it.

“So what I am saying Dylan, is I laugh in the face of death and I welcome it.” I pushed him away and he fell over the couch staring at me with wide eyes. Michael turned his haggard face towards me and something clicked in the universe.

“You are stupid Memphis.” His voice was a deep growl and it made me shiver. I shrugged and stared at Dylan. He continued to stare up at me from the couch; I started laughing and decided it was time to go seek out the danger that awaited me. There was a flash of movement and I was being knocked down on the floor. I muttered and wondered why is it every time I am around these two I end up on my butt?

I looked up at the human wall that was Michael; I stared at the way his jeans molded to the muscles in his legs, the shirt clung to his muscular arms and midsection. He could have been the quarterback for the football team, if he wanted to. I shook my head and saw him looking at me with the same confusion that I felt.

“While you two are eyeballing each other like a couple of horny teenagers, someone or something out there is killing our pack.” I felt the sting of Dylan’s words and closed my eyes. The pounding became more insistent in my head; I was starting to feel sick. I opened my eyes and saw the icy glare from Dylan. Ouch, if looks could kill, I would be dead, yet again. I shivered again.

“Dylan please do not fight with him, he can not help the call of the fates.” We turned our attention to Lydia, she looked pale and drawn, and Dylan made his way over towards her and helped her to the couch. Something was off about her; there was a sick scent to her. I narrowed my eyes; I could feel Michael tense behind me.

“We need to get out of here Memphis something is not right about her.” I flinched as I felt Michael’s warm breath by my ear. I saw Dylan kneeling before Lydia and something flashed in her eyes.

“Memphis we need to go now.” I was mesmerized by her, funny how she did not have that power over me before. It was as if everything was in slow motion as I saw the tragedy unfold before me. I did not feel Michael dragging me out into the frosty night, I did not even know who was screaming, and all I saw was the black hatred in Lydia’s eyes as she stared at me. The smell of death coming off her in great waves, and Dylan collapsed before her trembling fingers. Now if I can only figure out who was screaming, oh snap, the person screaming was me.
