Wind

Taking walks became our favorite pastime. Something that I always looked forward to. To be honest, just spending time with you was enough for me. Even on my darkest days or my loneliest hours, I could always rely on your presence to make everything seem perfect.

But my heart hurt with every word that I withheld because I knew that they will not be welcomed. Still, I could still manage to smile when I was with you. Why is that? If I cannot have you, then why I still feel hope fluttering in my chest like a caged bird waiting to spread its snowy wings?

Once, during a long stroll in that familiar park where we first met, the capricious weather threw a fit and caused an unnaturally cold wind to whip around us. Though I wore a light jacket, the wind passed through the fabric and slapped my face. But you, wearing only a T-shirt, couldn’t help a shiver from shaking your body.

The cold wind that makes you shake…before it falls on you,

Stopping a moment and asking you to stop for a moment, I pulled you underneath the protective arms of an oak tree. Ignoring my body’s protests, I pulled my arms from the still-warm sleeves of the jacket. I tuned out your protests, a skill that I learned from having a younger brother. Draping that dark blue jacket over your shivering shoulders and keeping my quivering arms around you, I held you close to me.

I’ll cover you.

After insisting to no avail and feeling the warmth seep into your body, you finally quieted down and, falling in step with me, curled closer to me. Walking side by side, I hoped you wouldn’t feel my shivers or my heavily drumming heart. Through the light drizzle that started, I wanted only your warmth and your presence. Together, we made our way home.
