Fushigi Yugi: Genbu Kaiden fanfiction. Wrote it at the same time as Of Different Worlds, but never got around to add it. Happier version. Apologizes for adding it late and the possible confusion this story might cause. Hope you enjoy it anyway!

Across time

…A beautiful love that trespasses time and space…

Crossing into her world wasn’t as hard as he thought. When he opened his deep grey eyes, he was on top of a tall hill overlooking waving grass stalks. The sun was well on its journey across the sky. Further past the seemingly boundless field was a small town. He wondered if he was really in her time.

It had been three months since their last meeting. It was his fault that she left. But it was for her protection. The moment she accepted her fate to become the Priestess of Genbu, she took on a great role. But her role as the savior of his world came with a terrible price. A price that he was unwilling to pay. Her life…So, he convinced all of the other Celestial Warriors to force her back to this world where it was safe.

Three months passed in great agony. He always knew she meant a lot to him, but he finally realized the tremendous place she had in his heart. He saw her laughing phantom everywhere. She haunted his waking moments and much of his dreams. Then he found a portal that crossed into her world. The temptation was too great for him so here he was now, hoping the slightest glimpse, the slightest proof that his choice for her was right.

The morning sun was sinking to the afternoon. He closed his eyes and felt the wind. It was much cooler here, but the sun was still warm and still sent the same shivers through his body. Their worlds weren’t so different…

He pulled a wooden flute from his belt. After turning the intricate instrument in his long fingers for a moment, he brought it to his lips. The first notes that were born from the smooth wood were gentle and tentative, but soon his emotions took over and he just gave himself up to the music.

“The Song of the Gondola…” The song was originally meant to be as sweet as she had sung it for him the first time. But his memories of her turned it into something heart-wrenching and it brought light tears to his closed eyes. The intricate patterns of notes flowed perfectly with the gentle wind that danced around his body…

A sob brought him out of his trance. Whipping around and moving into a fighting stance, he saw a girl standing there. His heart thumped heavily. She was thin with dark brown eyes. Her long black hair was pulled halfway with a blue ribbon and her bangs were parted to the right. Tears slipped down her soft face into a pale blue kimono.

With his eyes intent on her, she blushed and hastily wiped away her tears. “Sorry, for disturbing you, sir,” she smiled shyly. “You just play so well.”

He felt his emotions welling up inside of him. He wanted to rush to her and hold her tightly in his arms again. But his mind pointed out the “sir” in her sentence. Was this really her? He held back.

“Don’t you remember?” he asked.

She shook her head slowly.

He stepped towards her until he was an arm length away. She was taller than he remembered. He looked at her from head to toe, ignoring her blush. When he finally met her eyes, he said again weakly, “You don’t remember me?”

She stepped back a little. Her heart was in confusion. Who was this tall and handsome man? “Have we met?”

His grey eyes became deeply sad. “A long time ago…”

She couldn’t understand what he was talking about.

“Are you happy?” his question brought her out of her thoughts.

“I guess so.” She replied.

A slight smile touched his lips, but it never reached his eyes. “That’s good.”

Suddenly a voice carried up the hill. “Ta…ko!” the faint voice rung slightly through him. He couldn’t understand why.

She turned behind her. “Oh, it’s my friend…” The name that followed slipped past his ear before he could catch it.

“Ta…ko!” The voice rang again.

Something in him told him it was time to go and to return to his time, his world. He closed his eyes and stepped back. Bowing his brown-black haired head, he murmured, “I wish you happiness.”

“Wai—” she started, but her friend cut her off.

“Geez, Taigako,” the other girl ran to her friend’s side.  She pushed the bangs out of her dark brown eyes. “I was calling you!” This girl was just like Taigako except that her hair ribbon and kimono were a light pink and her bangs were parted through the middle.

“Sorry, Takiko,” her friend apologized. “I was talking to—” She turned around, but the man had disappeared.

Takiko looked to where she was looking. “To whom?”

Taigako swung her head around, but there was no sign of him. “I swear he was just here…”

“Who?” Takiko asked again.

Taigako paused for a moment then said, “He never told me his name.”

On the other side of the portal, Limdo pressed his hand against the invisible door that he had discovered. He thought of her. She hadn’t changed since he last saw her. She was still so beautiful…But something was different about her…He couldn’t pinpoint what it was…

“What did he look like?” Takiko asked her curiously.

“He was handsome and about this tall” Taigako held her hand a good foot over her head. “He had deep grey eyes. His hair was a dark brown and short except for the long length that fell down his back. He wore wrist guards and clothes that I’ve never seen…Takiko?”

Unnoticed tears slipped down Takiko’s face. Her heart lifted. He still remembered her and he had come to see her.

“Limdo…” She whispered.

“Limdo…” his head jerked up. He looked around. He was sure he had heard his name.

“What’s wrong, Takiko?”

She wiped her tears away. “It’s nothing.” She grinned. “Go ahead. I just need some time alone. I’ll see you later Taigako.”

“But—” She started to protest then stopped. The expression on her friend’s face made her insides turn in an uncomfortable but somehow pleased way. Instead, she nodded and ran down the hill without another word.

Takiko turned back to the open area. She knew he was still there. Feeling around she searched for the portal.

“Where are you, Limdo…?” She whispered.

“…Are…Limdo?”

This time he knew where it was from. But the voice was so weak that he couldn’t recognize the voice. He leaned in. “Who’s there?” he said clearly.

“Who’s there?”

She was surprised to hear the response. He was there, just on the other side. She smiled through more tears that created rivers on her face.

“Someone you know…”

“…You know…”

He couldn’t believe it. His heart jumped excitedly.

He pressed his hand against the invisible door.

She touched her hand against the empty space.

He sensed a warmth from under his palm.

She felt a pulse from next to her open hand.

They both scented the Toqa seed…

And at once, they both knew…

“Takiko…”

“Limdo…”

Tears of unspeakable joy slipped down both faces. They both pressed their foreheads against the transparent barrier that separated them.

“I love you…”

“Me, too…me, too…”

A moment passed between the two lovers.

Limdo finally spoke. “Come back…We need you…I need you…”

She had been waiting for this for three painful months, but it still shocked her for a moment. “How?” was her tentative response.

“It’s easy. Like this.” He said, as he reached his arm across time. He reached and touched a warm wrist. Pulling gently, he felt her fall through the portal. A warm figure tumbled against him and he toppled over from the sudden weight.

Surprise jolted through her as she felt something warm and real against her hand. She knew the owner of this hand. She let herself get pulled through time and space. Suddenly, her head fell against something strong and very warm. Pounding drowned out all sounds.

The scent of Toqa filled his head.

The scent of Toqa drifted into her nose.

He knew it was her.

She knew it was him.

Who else was made more perfectly for me?

Who else could hold me like that?

They both smiled and thought, silently and together, “After all, who else would love me this way?”

“I know how deeply we’re connected. That such a bond could grow from such a tiny [Toqa] seed… No matter how far apart we are…he feels closer than anyone else in the world. I can feel his warmth and everything about him. It’s something only we share…”
